Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen peacefully exited his home without incident on Wednesday after police and mental health professionals responded to a 911 call made by Griffen. They spent most of the day working with Griffen to get him to leave his home after he said there was an intruder inside of his home and that he needed help. Authorities were unable to locate an intruder in Griffen's residence. Griffen took a five-game leave of absence in 2018 due to a mental health-related issue, and the Vikings only concern at the moment is his well-being. It's unlikely that Griffen will be available for the Week 12 game against the San Francisco 49ers, and with most of their defensive line starters injured or out, we wouldn't recommend using the Vikings defense in fantasy against a physical 49ers offense.
The Minnesota Vikings signed defensive end Everson Griffen to an undisclosed deal on Monday. Griffen managed six sacks for the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions last year, but he spent the first 10 seasons of his career in Minnesota. The four-time Pro Bowler had 258 solo tackles, 86 tackles for loss, 74.5 sacks, two interceptions (one for a touchdown), 16 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries (one touchdown) in his 10 seasons with the Vikings. The 33-year-old is more of a situational pass-rusher at this point in his career, so don't expect him to return to a starting role with the Vikings or be fantasy relevant in IDP leagues.
Lions Defense Won't Have Everson Griffen In Week 8
Because of COVID-19 protocols, the Detroit Lions Defense will not have newly acquired defensive end Everson Griffen available to play in Week 8 against the Colts. Griffen's debut with Detroit will come on Nov. 8 against the Vikings, the team that he spent the first 10 years of his career with while earning four Pro Bowl nods. The Lions sent a sixth-round draft pick in 2021 to the Cowboys for Griffen's services on Tuesday, and he'll be a veteran present for Detroit's defensive line the rest of the season. While the 32-year-old isn't an IDP starting option at his position on a weekly basis, he should help improve their defensive line. However, the Lions defense overall is near the bottom of the league in fantasy points through seven weeks, so you should continue to avoid them everywhere.
The Detroit Lions are acquiring defensive end Everson Griffen from the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick, according to sources. The Cowboys are now 2-5 after their loss to Washington and are officially sellers with the trade deadline approaching and franchise quarterback Dak Prescott (ankle) out for the season. In seven games for Dallas this year, the veteran pass-rusher had 20 tackles (10 solo), six QB hits and 2.5 sacks. Griffen is a four-time Pro Bowler during his 10-year run with the Vikings and will provide veteran leadership to a Lions Defense that ranks 30th in the league in overall fantasy points. You should continue to ignore Detroit's D in Week 8 against the Colts.
Everson Griffen An Option To Be Dealt Ahead Of Trade Deadline
Dallas Cowboys defensive end Everson Griffen is reportedly available to be acquired by an interested organization ahead of the NFL Trade Deadline. Griffen, a Pro Bowler in four of the past five seasons, has compiled 20 combined tackles and 2.5 sacks in his first seven games with the Cowboys Defense. With Randy Gregory having been activated to the active roster prior to the team's game Sunday versus Washington, Griffen has become an expendable piece for a team whose defensive production has fallen off significantly in 2020. While Philadelphia -- Dallas' opponent Sunday -- has scuffled offensively as of late, the Cowboys' defense has virtually no fantasy intrigue in any format with or without Griffen due to the league-high 34.7 points per game that they've allowed this year.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is excited about the prospects of coaching defensive end Everson Griffen, who signed a one-year deal with Dallas on Wednesday. "I can't say enough about Everson Griffen," McCarthy said. "Just the fact of being able to compete against him twice a year. He was always a primary focus for us offensively going up against him. He's a relentless player. He brings it every down." Griffen was a starter the last six years for the Vikings and made the Pro Bowl four times in his last five seasons. The veteran pass-rusher had eight sacks and 41 tackles last year in his final season in Minnesota. He'll join a talented defensive line group that includes DeMarcus Lawrence, Gerald McCoy and Aldon Smith.
The Dallas Cowboys signed free-agent defensive end Everson Griffen to a contract on Wednesday evening. Griffen had spent over a decade with the Minnesota Vikings and had multiple suitors during free agency. The veteran lineman has recorded 74.5 sacks across his past 77 games and adds an extra pass-rushing element to the Cowboys' defense. The unit gave up the 11th-fewest points per game last season, but also lost Robert Quinn and Byron Jones over the summer. The Cowboys project to be a middle-of-the-pack DST unit in 2020.
Everson Griffen Not Ruling Out Return To Minnesota
Free-agent defensive end Everson Griffen, who took a leave of absence from the Vikings in 2018 to deal with mental-health issues, is in a good place mentally now and said he'd "never say never" on a possible return to Minnesota despite saying goodbye to the team on his social media last month. The 32-year-old recorded eight sacks in a bounce-back 2019 season and is one of the top pass-rushers on the market next to Jadeveon Clowney. Griffen has 57 sacks over the last six seasons, but his market has been cold, in part because free-agent visits and physicals have been canceled to the coronavirus. While a return to the Vikings seems unlikely, Griffen could still be an effective pass-rusher on the wrong side of 30. It could be a while before he signs, though, and he might be waiting to see what Clowney can fetch as a free agent.
Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has interest in joining the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source close to Griffen. The Seahawks could also be interested in Griffen if they don't re-sign Jadeveon Clowney, who is asking for close to $20 million a season. Clowney will likely have to sign with another team before Griffen signs, so it might be a while. The 32-year-old Griffen is on the wrong side of 30, but he has had at least eight sacks in five of the last six seasons with the Vikings and has been to the Pro Bowl four times since 2015. He'd be a great fallback option for Seattle if they don't want to meet Clowney's asking price. Griffen is older, but he's also shown more durability than Clowney.
The Cleveland Browns are likely to have free-agent defensive end Everson Griffen on their radar given his connection with the Browns coaches from their time together in Minnesota. Griffen is 32 years old but had 13, 5.5 and eight sacks in the last three seasons with the Vikings and can still be effective on the wrong side of 30. If the Browns sign him for one or two years, they could cut defensive end Olivier Vernon and save $5 million against the salary cap. Griffen would be a nice complement to Myles Garrett on the defensive line as the Browns look to boost their pass rush heading into the 2020 season.
