Ezekiel Elliott News
The Dallas Cowboys are open to re-signing running back Ezekiel Elliott after cutting the former No. 4 overall pick earlier this month after seven years with the team. The Cowboys saved over $10 million on the 2023 salary cap with the move, but head coach Mike McCarthy said the team might be willing to work something out to bring him back at a lower cost. Elliott scored 12 touchdowns in 2022, but he also had a career-low 876 rushing yards and was far less explosive than backfield mate Tony Pollard. The 27-year-old Elliott averaged 3.8 yards per attempt last year and is now more of a short-yardage/goal-line back in the NFL. Elliott has narrowed down his list of teams to the Eagles, Jets and Bengals, but it remains to be seen if that trio of teams wants to take on the aging back.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Bengals "are looming large" regarding a potential deal with free-agent running back Ezekiel Elliott. Cincinnati is looking to bolster its backfield, so adding the former Buckeye could be on the radar. However, it's still unknown if the Bengals plan on retaining Joe Mixon, although the team could save roughly $8 million against the cap by cutting ties with him. It's no secret the franchise wants to keep Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins moving forward. As a result, adding Elliott may be a logical approach, especially if things align from a fiscal sense. But it could also signal the end of Mixon's career in Cincinnati.
Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has narrowed down his options to the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals, and he would like to make his decision on where to play next by the end of next week, according to sources. The Cowboys cut Elliott after seven seasons with the team. Although Zeke did have four 1,000-yard rushing campaigns in his time in Dallas, he had become much less explosive the last two years while losing valuable touches to Tony Pollard. The 27-year-old had a career-low 876 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 231 carries last year, but he'll likely be more of a short-yardage, goal-line back wherever he lands next. Based purely on the teams' depth charts, the Bengals look to be the best fit for Elliott on paper.
