Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (ankle) is reportedly progressing well in rehab, with Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network saying the team thinks Prescott is "going to come back better than ever." While he doesn't have a long term deal with the Cowboys and could be a free agent in 2021, it makes sense for both sides to get a deal done. Prescott is a top-five fantasy quarterback when healthy and has arguably the top three-man receiving corps in the NFL.
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith (wrist) will undergo left wrist surgery on Thursday, according to multiple sources. Smith led the team with 154 tackles and didn't miss a single game in 2020, but he was on the injury report in Week 16 with a wrist injury. He should be ready for the beginning of the offseason program. Smith is scheduled to make a base salary of $7.2 million next season, which becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the new league year, and he carries a $9.8 million cap figure. Because of that, there are some questions about his future with the team. The 25-year-old is signed through the 2025 season and has posted at least 120 tackles in three of his four seasons. He has 498 career tackles and nine sacks in 64 career games and should be considered a top-10 fantasy linebacker in IDP leagues.
The Dallas Cowboys have an agreement in place to make former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn their next defensive coordinator, according to a source. Quinn will sign a three-year contract. He was fired after Atlanta started 0-5 this year and he will replace Mike Nolan, who was fired after just one season. The 50-year-old Quinn was also the defensive coordinator for the Seahawks, where his defense ranked No. 1 in yards and points allowed in both of his seasons at the helm with the Legion of Boom. He will inherit a Dallas defense that allowed the fifth-most points (473) and second-most rushing yards per game (158.8) during the 2020 season.
Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn spent Saturday interviewing for the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator job, according to a source. Quinn is on a flight on Monday to meet the Dallas brass in person and is a top candidate for the defensive coordinator position. A deal could come as soon as Monday, according to a source. The 50-year-old was fired by the Falcons just five games into the 2020 season with an 0-5 record. He went 43-42, including a trip to the Super Bowl in 2016, in five-plus seasons in Atlanta. Quinn's defense ranked No. 1 in yards and points allowed in his two seasons as the defensive coordinator in Seattle. The Cowboys are looking to replace Mike Nolan, was led a porous Dallas D this season. The Cowboys have also interviewed Falcons secondary coach Joe Whitt and Panthers defensive passing-game coordinator Jason Simmons.
The Dallas Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Mike Nolan on Friday after just one season with the team. The Cowboys also fired defensive line coach Jim Tomsula after he was hired just three days after Nolan was last January. Dallas finished the 2020 season ranked 11th in passing defense (227.6 yards per game), 28th in scoring defense (29.6 points per game) and 31st in rushing defense (158.8 yards per game). The Cowboys Defense finished ninth in total defense in 2019, so this was a big step back. Everson Griffen was traded, Gerald McCoy was injured and cut before the season and Dontari Poe and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix were released prior to the regular season. Linebackers Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch both underperformed due to injuries. Obviously, Dallas' D will have to make strides before fantasy managers look their way in 2021.
