Matt Hennessy News
The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent offensive lineman Matt Hennessy (knee) to an undisclosed one-year deal on Tuesday, according to a league source. The 26-year-old started 22 games for the Atlanta Falcons since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2020 out of Temple. He will help add depth to Philadelphia's offensive line on the interior. The 6-foot-3, 307-pounder was slated to start for the Falcons at left guard last year before suffering a knee injury in training camp in late July that caused him to miss all of 2023. Of his 22 starts in the NFL, 17 of them came in center for Atlanta in 2021. Knee injuries have been an issue for Hennessy the last two seasons, so the Eagles will be hoping that he can finally get past those concerns in 2024.
The Atlanta Falcons placed offensive lineman Matt Hennessy (knee) on season-ending Injured Reserve on Wednesday. Hennessy, who has started 22 games on the interior of the team's offensive line in the last three years, has been out of practice since July 28 due to a knee injury. The 25-year-old was expected to compete for the left guard job at training camp, but now second-round rookie Matthew Bergeron is the favorite to earn a starting gig in his first NFL season. Hennessy was taken in the third round in 2020 and is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season. Hennessy has been dealing with lingering knee issues for the last two years.
The Atlanta Falcons selected Temple offensive lineman Matt Hennessy with the No. 78 overall pick in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft on Friday. Hennessy is very agile for a center and has great balance at the pivot. The 6-foot-4, 307-pounder will need to add strength as he matures at the next level, but this is obviously a need for the Falcons after their recent draft picks on the offensive line haven't exactly panned out. Hennessy could become a reliable starter at center for the Falcons in a few seasons, and he has the upside to be a Pro Bowler if everything works out.
