Luke Schoonmaker Expected To Miss OTAs With Hamstring Injury

Dallas Cowboys tight end Luke Schoonmaker (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out throughout organized team activities. Schoonmaker had shoulder surgery this offseason, but his hamstring injury is what is keeping him off the field this spring. He missed all of his 2023 rookie spring with a foot injury. The Cowboys took Schoonmaker in the second round of last year's draft out of Michigan, and he caught only eight of 15 targets for 65 yards and two touchdowns in 17 regular-season games in 2023 while working in a backup role behind Jake Ferguson. Schoonmaker has had trouble with injuries early in his NFL career, but as long as he's able to get back on the field for training camp this summer, he should have a chance to be ready for Week 1 of the 2024 regular season. Barring an injury to Ferguson, Schoonmaker can be left to the waiver wire in most redraft fantasy leagues.

Luke Schoonmaker Has Surgery, Expected To Be Ready For Camp

Dallas Cowboys tight end Luke Schoonmaker (shoulder) had shoulder surgery recently but is "all systems go" for training camp this summer, according to a person familiar with the situation. Schoonmaker played in all 17 regular-season games in his rookie season in 2023 after being taken in the second round out of Michigan, but he didn't do much behind Jake Ferguson, catching only eight of 15 targets for 65 yards and two touchdowns. However, his shoulder injury may have been partially to blame. The 25-year-old could have a bigger role in his sophomore campaign in Dallas, but as long as Ferguson stays healthy, it's hard to envision Schoonmaker being very attractive for fantasy managers on a weekly basis. As long as Ferguson is healthy, Schoonmaker will be a blocker over a receiver.

Luke Schoonmaker Hauls In A Touchdown Against Panthers

Dallas Cowboys tight end Luke Schoonmaker ended up as the top fantasy scorer at the position for the team despite not getting as many targets as Jake Ferguson. The rookie caught both of his targets for 23 yards and a score which came in the red zone when he found an open part of the field over the middle. This was his second score of the season and he now has five catches for 37 yards so far this year. He's not very likely to be consistently relevant in fantasy football, so there should be better options in Week 12.

Luke Schoonmaker Scores His First NFL Touchdown

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker made his first NFL catch in Week 2, scoring his first NFL touchdown in the process. He's only been targeted once through two games, but he made it count, scoring a touchdown in the second quarter of the 30-10 win. Schoonmaker has nice longer term upside, but he has Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot ahead of him on the depth chart for now.

Luke Schoonmaker Is Pain-Free

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) said after Tuesday's training camp practice that he's pain-free after working his way back from plantar fasciitis. Schoonmaker played 21 offensive snaps in the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars and 29 offensive snaps in the preseason game last Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks. He's been targeted three times in the two games, catching all three passes for 30 yards. "It's pretty much back to where it was before (the injury)," Schoonmaker said of his foot. "I'm just doing strengthening stuff. I'm really trying to get the rest of my foot strong around it so that I don't have any issues." The second-rounder will begin his rookie season behind Jake Ferguson, putting him off the fantasy radar in redraft leagues.

Luke Schoonmaker Getting More Work In Camp

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) will get more work in training camp practice on Thursday. Schoonmaker missed the start of camp with a partial tear of his plantar fasciia, but he was activated from the Non-Football Injury list earlier this week and continues to progress to more work in practices. Don't expect the 24-year-old to play in Dallas' first preseason game, but barring a setback, he should be ready for the start of the regular season. The tight end spot is wide open for the Cowboys in 2023 now that Dalton Schultz is gone, giving Schoonmaker an opportunity to make a big impact in his rookie season. However, fantasy managers should temper expectations, as Jake Ferguson seems locked into the top pass-catching role in this offense for now.

Luke Schoonmaker Working His Way Back

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) took part in a more full training camp practice on Tuesday and also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Will Grier. Schoonmaker was finally activated from the Non-Football Injury list in camp on Monday and is starting to do more on the field just a day later. The 24-year-old had been sidelined with a partial tear of his plantar fasciitis in his foot. While he was out, second-year tight end Jake Ferguson cemented himself as the team's No. 1 tight end, but Schoonmaker will eventually have a chance to earn more playing in his first NFL season now that Dalton Schultz is in Houston. Still, Ferguson is the better fantasy bet in 2023 as a low-end TE2 streaming option in deeper fantasy leagues.

Luke Schoonmaker To Be Activated Off NFI List

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) is being activated off the NFI (Non-Football Illness/Injury) list on Monday and will be eased into training camp practice. The 24-year-old has been dealing with a partial tear to the plantar fasciitis of his right foot but has stepped up his work over the last week and will hopefully get back to full action sooner than later. Schoonmaker will likely see playing time in his rookie campaign in 12-personnel packages, but his pass-catching upside will be limited.

Luke Schoonmaker Could Return To Practice Soon

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) could return to training camp practice as soon as Monday. Schoonmaker had a minor setback with the foot injury on Saturday that caused him to open camp on the Non-Football Injury list. The 24-year-old second-rounder is dealing with a partial tear to his plantar fasciitis, but apparently it's not very serious. He has been able to run routes, but he needs to get on the field for important repetitions with the offense in camp. The departure of Dalton Schultz this offseason paves the way for Schoonmaker to have a significant role in his first NFL season, but Jake Ferguson will have something to say about that. Given the fact that young tight ends often take time to develop, fantasy managers in redraft leagues shouldn't expect much from the rookie early on.

Luke Schoonmaker Doing Side Work On Thursday

Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) was spotted running routes on the side at Thursday's training camp practice. The 24-year-old is gearing up to practice with the team soon, so it's a positive development in his plantar fascia recovery. Schoonmaker posted just 54 receptions in 43 collegiate games, so it's tough to expect him to make a fantasy impact in his debut campaign. Jake Ferguson is expected to be the primary pass-catching tight end for Dak Prescott in 2023.
