Tyler Smith Optimistic He'll Play In Week 1

Dallas Cowboys left guard Tyler Smith (hamstring) is optimistic that he can play in the Week 1 regular season opener this Sunday night against the New York Giants. "He says he feels really good. He's very optimistic," head coach Mike McCarthy said. Smith won't practice on Thursday and will rehab off to the side with director of rehabilitation Britt Brown as part of a return-to-play procedure. The 22-year-old injured his hamstring in practice earlier this week and was diagnosed with a strain, but the Cowboys aren't ruling him out of Sunday night's game. If Smith can't practice by Saturday, then the Cowboys will likely move Chuma Edoga into the starting lineup.

Tyler Smith Should Be Ready For Week 1

An MRI exam confirmed that Dallas Cowboys left guard Tyler Smith (hamstring) suffered a hamstring strain in practice on Monday, according to a person with knowledge of the injury. However, owner Jerry Jones said on Tuesday that he was confident that Smith would be ready to go for the Week 1 regular season opener against the New York Giants on Sunday. It will depend on how the 22-year-old second-year offensive guard recovers from the injury and how much he's able to do in practice leading up to Sunday's game this week. If Smith is unable to go, rookie fifth-rounder Asim Richards would likely step in as the starter at left guard for the Cowboys.

Tyler Smith Expected To Start At Left Tackle

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said "it's safe to say" that rookie first-round offensive tackle Tyler Smith will be the starting left tackle in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Tyron Smith (hamstring, knee) out until at least December. Smith returned to practice on Monday after sitting out last week with a sprained ankle. Dallas selected the 21-year-old in the first round with visions of Smith becoming their left tackle of the future, but he'll have to step in sooner than expected. It's certainly a downgrade for the Cowboys offensive line and quarterback Dak Prescott, but Smith certainly has the ability to succeed right away.

Tyler Smith Working At Left Tackle

Dallas Cowboys first-round offensive tackle Tyler Smith has mostly worked at left guard since he was drafted in April, but he was lined up at left tackle when the first-team offense opened team drills on Thursday at organized team activities. Tyron Smith was held out of practices last week with some lower-back tightness, but he was on the field Thursday and took the majority of the first-team repetitions at left tackle. When Tyron Smith was at left tackle, the rookie was lined up at left guard. If everything goes to plan, Tyler Smith will be the team's eventual starting left tackle down the road. "I think he seems a little more natural at guard right now. I know he's played tackle in college. But his aggressive nature fits well for him in there," head coach Mike McCarthy said.

Cowboys Sign First-Rounder Tyler Smith

The Dallas Cowboys signed first-round offensive tackle Tyler Smith to a four-year, fully guaranteed $13.38 million deal that includes a fifth-year team option on Friday, according to sources. Smith was a two-year starter at Tulsa that was taken with the 24th overall selection in the first round this year. The 21-year-old is considered a bit raw, but he has considerable upside at both left tackle and guard at the next level. Smith probably has a better shot to start at guard in his rookie season, but he could also compete for the left tackle job in training camp. The Cowboys had arguably the best offensive line a few seasons ago, but that isn't the case anymore. The addition of Smith will upgrade the unit significantly.

Tyler Smith To Compete On Left Side Of Line

The Dallas Cowboys think first-round rookie offensive lineman Tyler Smith has a lot of upside, and vice president Stephen Jones said "he'll compete on that left side: left guard, left tackle." Starting left tackle Tyron Smith has missed a lot of time with injuries in recent seasons, so Smith not only provides versatility on the left side of the offensive line, but he could step into the left tackle spot if Smith misses more time in 2022 due to injury. Smith was a two-year starter at left tackle at Tulsa. He's raw on the offensive line and he'll have to clean up some sloppy play penalty-wise, but the Cowboys felt the need to bolster their O-line after it was once considered one of the best units in the NFL several years ago.

Cowboys Bolster Offensive Line With Tyler Smith

The Dallas Cowboys took Tulsa offensive tackle Tyler Smith with the 24th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on Thursday night. The Cowboys had one of the best offensive lines in all of football several years ago, but that's no longer the case, and Dallas really needed to address the position, so this pick makes perfect sense. The 21-year-old may not be great right away in the NFL, but he does have plenty of upside at both tackle and guard, which will give the Cowboys some flexibility. Smith stands at an imposing 6-foot-5, 324 pounds, and he had a 5.02-second 40-yard dash at the combine back in February. It's more likely that Smith is starting at a guard spot in the NFL initially.
