Jadeveon Clowney News
The Cleveland Browns have released defensive end Jadeveon Clowney on Wednesday. The organization will eat $1.5 million in dead cap by releasing Clowney with a post-June 1 designation. The former No. 1 overall pick put together a lackluster season for the Browns in 2022. He finished with 28 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks in 12 games. He'll be entering his age-30 season, but still should have something left in the tank. There should be multiple suitors for Clowney in free agency, but his inconsistent play is going to hurt his chances of a long term deal.
ESPN's Field Yates doesn't think the Cleveland Browns will re-sign impending free-agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney this offseason. The writing is written clearly on the wall for this one. Clowney was benched in the regular season finale after making public comments that were critical of Cleveland's coaching staff. He also said suggested he'd likely be out the door in free agency, although the Browns did fire previous defensive coordinator Joe Woods. Clowney, a former first-rounder in 2014, played in 12 games and finished with just two sacks and 28 tackles (14 solo). The three-time Pro Bowler will mostly likely have a new uniform in 2023, and he won't be worth drafting in IDP formats.
The Cleveland Browns downgraded defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to out for the Week 18 regular season finale on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Clowney made comments to the media this week that he was unhappy with the coaching staff's decisions on his playing time this year, which has led to him being a healthy scratch for the final game this season. The 29-year-old pass-rusher is signed through the 2026 season, but given his comments detrimental to the team, there's a good chance the Browns will look to move on from Clowney this offseason. The three-time Pro Bowler only managed two sacks in 12 games in 2022 after posting nine in his first year with the team in 2021. With Clowney out on Sunday, Alex Wright should get the start on Cleveland's defensive line.
