Derek Stingley Jr. News
Houston Texans rookie first-round cornerback Derek Stingley (hamstring) will miss his second straight game in Week 12 against the Miami Dolphins due to a strained hamstring. Stingley has been sidelined at practice since last week and will not play this Sunday, leaving Houston's secondary vulnerable against perhaps the best receiving duo in the NFL in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Stingley hasn't allowed a touchdown pass all season. He was replaced at outside cornerback by Desmond King against the Washington Commanders last week, starting opposite Steven Nelson with Tavierre Thomas filling in as the primary nickel. Stingley has 43 tackles, one interception and one sack in nine starts for the Texans in his first year in the NFL.
Houston Texans rookie cornerback Derek Stingley (foot) has looked good early in training camp while coming off a Lisfranc injury that ended his final year in college early. Stingley was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2020 out of LSU, and despite concerns about his foot, Houston took him third overall in this year's draft. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is expecting the 21-year-old to start right away for the Texans in his rookie season. In three games before his injury in 2021, Stingley had eight tackles (3.5 for loss) and a forced fumble. Stingley obviously has an extremely high ceiling at the next level, and the Texans are hoping he'll help turn around what has been an awful secondary in recent seasons immediately.
Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith said the team is ramping up cornerback Derek Stingley (foot) in training camp, and he's expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts. Stingley is trying to return from Lisfranc injury to his left foot and he'll be eased into workouts at camp. The Texans will be careful with the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft. When fully healthy, the 21-year-old has the ability to be an elite cover corner in the NFL. Houston's secondary has been a weak spot for a while, so hopefully Stingley can help start to turn that around.
