Davis Mills News
Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills had his ups and downs as the team's starter in his rookie season in 2021, but he has more confidence heading into his second NFL season. "I just think his leadership and his confidence is really taking control in that huddle. He's not that rookie anymore. He comes in, he knows that's his huddle, and that's what you look for in your quarterback," wide receiver Brandin Cooks said. Mills' development could be helped this year with quarterbacks coach and passing-game coordinator Pep Hamilton making the move to offensive coordinator. Hamilton is expected to focus on improving the team's rushing attack, which will in turn take some pressure off Mills. The 23-year-old threw for 1,258 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions in his final five starts. While Mills could take the next step in his second season, he won't be considered much more than a low-end QB2 in fantasy for a rebuilding franchise.
Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills appears to have the starting job locked up heading into next season. Mills was a third round pick from 2021, which could turn out to be a steal. Both head coach Lovie Smith and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton believe Mills could be the real deal. Last season, Mills finished with 2,664 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 13 games (10 starts) with Houston. Those aren't exactly great numbers, but the Texans didn't give Mills much talent to use. The organization is hopeful that Mills can take a step forward in 2022. That could be a difficult task unless the Texans bring in legitimate help for the young quarterback. It's tough to imagine Mills being someone worth rostering on draft day in most formats.
New Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith is very aware of quarterback Davis Mills' potential and promise after a strong rookie year in which he took over as the team's starting quarterback due to injuries to Tyrod Taylor and Deshaun Watson's legal situation. "He played about as well as any of the rookie quarterbacks did last year. So (I'm) excited about some of the things that he can bring," Smith said. Mills didn't win a game in his first seven starts, but he played much better down the stretch and showed promise for a third-round pick. Going into his second year in 2022, he'll have a familiar face to work with in newly promoted offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. Taylor is a free agent and Watson could very well be traded, so it remains to be seen if Houston will take a QB with the third overall pick despite Mills' strong showing in 2021.
