Jalen Hurd Hangs Up His Cleats

The New England Patriots placed wide receiver Jalen Hurd on the Reserve/Retired list on Tuesday. Hurd didn't make it too far into training camp this summer before deciding that he didn't want to play professional football anymore. The 27-year-old's career was defined by injuries after the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round in 2019 out of Baylor. Believe it or not, he never made it onto the field for a single game in the NFL. Hurd got off to a bad start in his rookie campaign when he suffered a back injury that kept him out all year before tearing his ACL before the 2022 season. It's a shame that Hurd was never able to showcase his quickness on an NFL field.

Patriots Sign Wide Receiver Jalen Hurd

Wide receiver Jalen Hurd signed with the New England Patriots after impressing at a workout for free agents. Hurd, a former five-star recruit who played running back and wide receiver for the Tennessee Volunteers and Baylor Bears, was drafted in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2019. Unfortunately, he never had a chance to prove himself, as injuries caused him to miss each of his first three seasons. The 49ers released him in November 2021 after he suffered a preseason knee injury, and he didn't play in 2022. Hurd has the size and speed to be a playmaker if he can make the Patriots' final roster and stay healthy. The 230-pounder set a Tennessee state high school record for rushing yards, and he gained 4,282 yards from scrimmage in four years of Power Five college football.

49ers Waive Jalen Hurd Thursday

The San Francisco 49ers waived wide receiver Jalen Hurd (knee) on Thursday with an injury designation and signed offensive lineman Corbin Kaufusi and cornerback Saivion Smith to the practice squad in corresponding moves. Hurd was put on Injured Reserve on Sept. 11. The 25-year-old former third-round pick never made it on the field for the Niners in a regular season game due to various injuries along the way. Hurd suffered a setback after having surgery for a torn ACL in the preseason and wasn't available for the start of the 2021 season. The 49ers weren't expecting Hurd to contribute at all this year, so he'll hope to get healthy before attempting to latch on with another organization.

Jalen Hurd Ruled Out For Week 1

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd (knee) has been ruled out for Week 1 versus the Detroit Lions. Head coach Mike Shanahan said earlier in the week that Injured Reserved was a possibility, but it looks like for now that he will remain on the 53-man roster. Hurd was drafted in 2019, but injuries have prevented him from making his NFL debut and he is currently recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered in 2020. Even when healthy, Hurd has plenty of options ahead of him in the 49ers offense and he is unlikely to carry much value. He can be left on the waiver wire for now.

Jalen Hurd Could Be Headed For Injured Reserve

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd (knee) is a candidate to be put on Injured Reserve to give him more time to be fully ready for the season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Hurd will not be ready for the season-opener this weekend against the Detroit Lions and looks likely to miss at least three weeks. The 25-year-old former third-rounder has yet to play a single game in the NFL due to injuries. He was able to play in a preseason game this summer after tearing his ACL in 2020, but now he will miss more time. Even when Hurd returns from a likely IR stint, he won't be guaranteed a prominent role in San Francisco's offense. Continue to leave him to the waiver wire in all leagues.

Jalen Hurd Could Miss Week 1

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd (knee) is in danger of missing the opener against the Detroit Lions. The 25-year-old is currently dealing with a sore knee, which stems from last season's torn ACL. With head coach Kyle Shanahan likely to limit the number of wideouts in uniform from week to week, Hurd could still be a ways away from appearing in his first professional game. Nonetheless, managers in deeper formats would be justified by stashing him, although his health is constantly an issue.

Jalen Hurd Draws Six Targets in Preseason Finale

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd caught four of six targets for 25 yards during Sunday's 34-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason finale. The third-year wideout converted from playing running back in college at Tennessee but has failed to stay healthy during his first two years in the league. Obviously, head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to heavily involve Hurd during Sunday's game to gauge his skillset for making the final 53-man roster. His performance was decent, hauling in the majority of his targets and rushing once for two yards. However, Hurd failed to create much separation and was quickly caught after making receptions. Hurd should be avoided in redraft, but it is an interesting proposition to roster him as a deep stash in dynasty leagues.

Jalen Hurd Practices On Wednesday

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd (knee) returned to practice on Wednesday. Hurd has been dealing with tendinitis and has been an inconsistent presence on the field since training camp began. Still, despite consistent injuries limiting his overall potential over the years, the 25-year-old remains touted as a potential breakout candidate during the 2021-22 campaign. However, managers shouldn't take any risks with the former Baylor Bear, so it may be best to avoid him until the later rounds of fantasy drafts. He also needs to earn a spot on the roster, so there's that as well.

Jalen Hurd Possibly On The Bubble

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd (undisclosed) was observed on the sidelines during practice on Tuesday. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 2019 third-round pick "just didn't feel right" while also adding that there's "not much time left," possibly hinting at Hurd's potential for a roster spot. Some have labeled the 25-year-old as a possible breakout fantasy option heading into the 2021 campaign. However, after battling injuries over the years and with the latest news, it now appears he could be in danger of not making the team at all.

Jalen Hurd Could Be Wild Card For 49ers Offense

If healthy, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jalen Hurd is an ideal fit for head coach Kyle Shanahan's "big slot" No. 3 receiver role. But because of Hurd's injury issues early in his career, he remains a big unknown entering training camp. Hurd would take on significant run-blocking responsibilities in that role, but he could also frequently be flexed out to receiver. The 25-year-old could also be used at running back. After all, he was a running back in college. The Niners think that Hurd can dominate smaller defenders from the slot like he did against the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason in 2019. Hurd missed all of 2019 and 2020 due to injuries, but he could certainly have an impact in San Fran's offense this year if he can stay on the field. He's unlikely to go drafted in shallow leagues, but Hurd isn't a bad late-round flier in deeper formats if he looks good in training camp.
