Josh McCown Emerges As Favorite To Become Texans Head Coach
Former quarterback Josh McCown has appeared to vault to the top of the heap of Houston Texans' head-coaching candidates, per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. McCown, 42, has never held a head coaching post beyond the high school level but his relationship with Texans brass has reportedly worked heavily in his favor. Houston moved on from David Culley after just one season in which he went 4-13, largely held back by the team's uncertainty under center. McCown played 16 seasons in the NFL, appearing in 102 games (76 starts) in that span. It's unclear what type of offense he would run -- and whether or not Deshaun Watson would be at his disposal -- if hired.
The Houston Texans released quarterback Josh McCown on Monday, according to the NFL's transaction wire. The 41-year-old played in three games for the Eagles in 2019 and became the league's oldest practice-squad player after he served as an emergency quarterback at the start of last season. McCown was signed to the active roster in November, but he never saw the field. The Texans actually interviewed him for their vacant head-coaching position in January, so McCown could get into coaching once he retires as a player. The Texans also announced on Monday that they signed running backs Buddy Howell and Dontrell Hilliard and cornerback Cornell Armstrong to contract extensions.
The Houston Texans are signing veteran quarterback Josh McCown on Wednesday, according to his agent, Mike McCartney. McCown was part of the Eagles practice squad earlier this season, but he'll now join Houston's active roster as the third-stringer behind Deshaun Watson and backup A.J. McCarron. The 41-year-old is more of a coach at this point of his career than a player, as he became the oldest practice squad player in NFL history with the Eagles earlier this season. McCown lives in Texas, so he'll get to be closer to home with his new squad.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Josh McCown spoke with head coach Doug Pederson about a potential role on the coaching staff, but McCown isn't ready to retire just yet. The veteran QB came out of retirement last August to sign a one-year deal with the Eagles. He's currently recovering from a torn hamstring that he suffered in the wild-card loss to the Seahawks. McCown threw only five passes during the regular season and served as a de facto player/coach as Carson Wentz's backup. He has some potential as a future offensive coordinator, but it's unlikely he would immediately be considered as Mike Groh's successor in Philly. Wherever McCown is playing in 2020, he'll strictly be a backup and won't have any fantasy value.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Josh McCown (hamstring) will undergo surgery on his hamstring next Tuesday, according to sources. The veteran quarterback played the second half of the wild-card loss against the Seahawks on a torn hamstring. Ouch. It's a testament that he stayed in the game in place of a concussed Carson Wentz to complete 18 of 24 passes for 174 yards. He somehow attempted five runs for 23 yards on his bum leg. After stints with the Cardinals, Lions, Raiders, Panthers, Bears, Buccaneers, Browns, Jets and Eagles, McCown is likely to hang up his cleats this offseason after throwing for 17,731 yards, 98 touchdowns and 82 interceptions in his career.
Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Josh McCown was forced to play almost all of Sunday's Wild Card game, entering after starter Carson Wentz was forced to leave with a head injury in the first quarter. McCown did the best he could, completing 18 of his 24 passes for 174 yards. He was also able to run five times for 23 more yards. McCown didn't make any mistakes, but he wasn't really able to make any of the big plays the Eagles needed against a smothering Seattle defense. McCown definitely still has something left though, and should return as Wentz's backup next season.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Josh McCown played most of Thursday's preseason game and looked good, completing 17 of his 24 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. McCown was signed recently, so his performance is even more impressive given how little time he had to work with his receivers. He threw a touchdown pass to rookie J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and another to depth tight end Alex Ellis. Even with Cody Kessler (concussion) back on the field, McCown will be the main backup to starter Carson Wentz when the season begins.
Josh McCown is coming out of retirement to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to sources. The Eagles are giving the veteran a one-year deal that includes $2 million fully guaranteed. The deal could be worth up to $5.4 million. The 40-year-old was needed after backups Cody Kessler (concussion) and Nate Sudfeld (wrist) suffered injuries in the first two preseason games. McCown went 5-11 as a starter for the Jets the last two years while throwing 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The Eagles will be his 11th NFL team.
New York Jets quarterback Josh McCown was unable to get anything going in the 26-22 loss to the Titans in Week 13. McCown drew his third straight start with Sam Darnold (foot) still sidelined. He finished 17-for-30 with 128 passing yards and one interception without a touchdown. To be fair, McCown doesn't have too many assets around him. It's unclear whether Darnold will return for Week 14. Regardless, McCown has shown no signs of life and belongs on the waiver wire.
The New York Jets are fully committed to making sure rookie quarterback Sam Darnold (foot) is 100 percent healthy when he returns, so sources are saying that the team plans to start Josh McCown again in Week 13 against the Titans. Darnold may do some work in pregame activities, but McCown is the likely starter. Expect the Jets to go back to Darnold next week. McCown had his moments as the starter last year, but he has a low ceiling and isn't an intriguing QB2 option this weekend.
