Free-agent quarterback Landry Jones, who has been busy working out for teams such as the Bills, Cowboys, Lions and Jaguars, is likely to land a job soon, according to a source. Jones was the former backup to Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. He won't have any fantasy value unless the starter ahead of him is injured. Stay tuned for where he lands.
The Pittsburgh Steelers released quarterback Landry Jones this weekend. The Steelers decided to go with rookie Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs as the backups to Ben Roethlisberger. Jones played in parts of three games last year and had one touchdown and one interception in 28 pass attempts.
Joshua Dobbs, Landry Jones Receiving Trade Interest
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks Joshua Dobbs and Landry Jones have garnered trade interest from some teams, according to sources. Jones doesn't have much experience, however. Dobbs will start the final preseason game with the Steelers still evaluating him. Rookie quarterback Mason Rudolph is a lock for the roster and might serve as the direct backup to Ben Roethlisberger in 2018. That makes both Dobbs and Jones expendable.
Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Landry Jones might not make the final roster out of training camp. Head coach Mike Tomlin would not guarantee whether the team's longtime backup would have a roster spot after final cuts. When asked, Tomlin stated, "We'll see where the road ends." Landry could end up getting squeezed off the roster by Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph, Pittsburgh's two young signal-callers.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Landry Jones turned in an effective Week 17 outing against the Cleveland Browns. Tabbed to lead the offense with starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the sidelines resting, Jones completed 23 of 27 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The veteran quarterback will return to backing up Roethlisberger when the Steelers take the field in two weeks for the AFC divisional round.
JuJu Smith-Schuster's Upside Takes A Hit With Landry Jones At QB
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has been the most productive wide receiver of this past year's draft class. The 21-year-old has caught 49 passes for 774 yards and six touchdowns in his debut campaign. Smith-Schuster's value in Week 17 will take a hit, however, with Ben Roethlisberger sitting out to rest. Landry Jones will instead be under center, which limits Smith-Schuster's upside against the Cleveland Browns. He can still be used as a WR3 in season-long leagues but he's too pricey to use in daily leagues without Roethlisberger.
With Ben Roethlisberger taking the week off to rest, the Pittsburgh Steelers will tab Landry Jones to start at quarterback in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns. The 28-year-old backup will make his first start of the 2017 season. The presence of Jones downgrades all the Pittsburgh pass-catchers for their Week 17 matchup, namely JuJu Smith-Schuster and Martavis Bryant. Jones is a marginal NFL quarterback, at best, and has some big shoes to fill with Roethlisberger on the sidelines. The Browns do represent a plus matchup for enemy quarterbacks with a pass defense ranked 29th in DVOA. That makes Jones interesting as a minimum-priced quarterback option in daily leagues this weekend.
Landry Jones Posts Respectable Stat Line in Week 7 Loss
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones completed 29-of-47 passes for 281 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 7's loss to the New England Patriots. Starting in place of an injured Ben Roethlisberger, Jones kept Pittsburgh in a game that could have gotten out of hand early. He kept the mistakes to a minimum and played remarkably well against a well-prepared Patriots defense. For fantasy football purposes, Jones' future as the starter rides solely the health of Roethlisberger's knee. The injured signal caller may be back as soon as Week 9, and with the Steelers on bye in Week 8 it remains to be seen if Jones will see another start. He should remain off of the fantasy radar regardless.
