The Houston Texans plan to release veteran defensive end Mario Addison one year after signing him to a two-year, $7.7 million deal, according to a source. However, the door isn't closed on a potential return. This is simply a salary cap-related move for the Texans. The 35-year-old was due to make $3 million this year, but the Texans will instead save $2.3 million against the salary cap by cutting him. Addison has 68 career sacks with six different teams in his 12-year career, but he totaled just one sack and 15 total tackles in 12 games (one start) for Houston in his first season with the team in 2022.
The Houston Texans signed veteran free-agent defensive end Mario Addison to an undisclosed deal on Monday, according to a league source. Addison played for defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire with the Buffalo Bills and also recently visited with the Seattle Seahawks. The 34-year-old spent the last two years in Buffalo, racking up 41 solo tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 15 QB hits, 12 sacks, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles in 32 games (seven starts). Before that, Addison spent seven years playing for the Carolina Panthers. He's not much of an option for those in IDP fantasy formats, as he's only had one season with double-digit sacks in 11 NFL seasons with five different teams. Addison will give the Texans a nice veteran presence on the D-line.
The Buffalo Bills agreed to an undisclosed three-year deal with former Carolina Panthers defensive end Mario Addison on Monday, according to a source. Addison, 32, is moving toward the back side of his career, but he has remained productive. He recorded 9.5 sacks with 34 tackles (20 solo) and two forced fumbles in 15 games for the Panthers in his final season. Addison may not be an every-down player at this stage of his career, but he'll come in handy for a strong Bills Defense after recording at least nine sacks in each of the last four seasons. Buffalo's defense/special teams should be a top-five fantasy unit in 2020.
The Carolina Panthers are interested in re-signing defensive end Mario Addison, but the 32-year-old plans to test the open market, according to league sources. Addison has 39 sacks in the last four seasons, which is the most of any Carolina player in that span. He finished with 34 tackles (20 solo), 9.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 15 total games during the 2019 season. Addison has at least nine sacks in each of the last four seasons, including a career-high 11 back in 2017.
Carolina Panthers defensive end Mario Addison weighs 255 pounds this year due to better eating habits after weighing 265 pounds in 2018. With Carolina moving to a hybrid defense that will feature more 3-4 in 2019, Addison may be asked to drop back in coverage more often. Addison is very athletic, but dropping into coverage more will likely hurt his overall sack total. He has at least tied for the team lead in sacks each of the last three years and had 9.5 in 2018, although only 1.5 of them came in the second half. Don't be surprised if the 31-year-old disappoints in the sack department with the team's move to a hybrid defense.
The Carolina Panthers re-signed defensive end Mario Addison to a three-year, $22.5 million deal Sunday, according to a source. Addison was one of the lone bright spots in Carolina's disappointing 2016 and led the team with 9.5 sacks. He also combined for a career-high 27 total tackles with one fumble recovery. Addison is one of the best rising pass rushers in the NFL and will command top dollar in IDP drafts in 2017.
