The Washington Commanders are signing veteran center Nick Martin to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday and adding him to the 53-man roster, according to a source. The former Houston Texan and Las Vegas Raider will add plenty of experience with 62 career starts under his belt. In a corresponding move, the Commanders placed center Chase Roullier (knee) on Injured Reserve. Martin, 29, was originally a second-round pick by the Texans in 2016 out of Notre Dame. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Texans before joining the Raiders last year, where he played 17 regular season games (zero starts).
Former Houston Texans center Nick Martin signed an undisclosed deal with the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, according to a source. Martin started 62 games for the Texans and will replace All-Pro center Rodney Hudson, who was traded to the Arizona Cardinals this week. Martin, a second-round pick in 2016, has started every game that he's appeared in his four NFL seasons and hasn't missed a single game in the last three years. He was widely considered one of the top available centers on the open market. Quarterback Derek Carr will be plenty happy, as Martin, like Hudson, is one of the best pass-blocking centers in the league.
The Houston Texans released center Nick Martin on Friday. Martin carried an $8.75 million salary cap hit for the 2021 season. With the release of Martin and running back Duke Johnson, the Texans are around the $20 million mark after the moves, with the salary cap projected near the stated floor of $180 million, per Over The Cap. Martin started 62 games over the last four seasons after he was selected in the second round of the 2016 draft and signed a three-year, $33 million deal in 2019, which included more than $18 million guaranteed. He was owed $7.25 million in 2021 and will have a dead-money charge of $2.5 million. The 27-year-old missed his entire rookie season due to a foot injury.
