Carolina Panthers running back Reggie Bonnafon was listed as the backup running back on the unofficial depth chart, which was released by the team Tuesday. Bonnafon only appeared in two games for Carolina last year, as he dealt with a high-ankle sprain. The team spent a fourth-round draft pick on Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard, who had a 2,000-yard rushing season back in 2019, though Bonnafon seems to be doing enough at camp so far to hold off the rookie. While Christian McCaffrey shouldn't suddenly be considered injury-prone, the 2020 season showed just how important the backup running back could be in Carolina, as Mike Davis filled in for the All-Pro and put together a fine season. Whoever emerges as the second-string halfback, Bonnafon or Hubbard, will likely rank fairly high on the list of running back insurance policies in fantasy football.
Reggie Bonnafon Exceeds 50 Scrimmage Yards, Scores Once
Carolina Panthers running back Reggie Bonnafon carried the ball 10 times for 53 rushing yards and caught two passes for 18 yards and a touchdown. Bonnafon ripped off a couple long runs in this one and looked good. He'll never get an easier touchdown than his receiving score, as he was left wide open by the Cardinals Defense. Fellow back Mike Davis has dominated the backfield touches, though it's quite possible that Bonnafon cut himself a little more of a share. Still, it's clear Carolina prefers Davis as the lead dog, so Bonnafon likely won't have much more value than a change-of-pace guy, barring an injury to Davis.
The Carolina Panthers have promoted running back Reggie Bonnafon to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. With Christian McCaffrey on the injured reserve, making this move seems like an obvious choice. Many expected Bonnafon to be the primary backup to McCaffrey this season, but he was passed by both Mike Davis and Trenton Cannon on the depth chart and wound up on the Carolina practice squad. Don't expect more than a handful of touches at most for Bonnafon, whose addition shouldn't impact Mike Davis's workload.
The Carolina Panthers have waived running back Reggie Bonnafon. Expected by many to serve as the insurance policy for starter Christian McCaffrey, it looks like that role now belongs to Mike Davis. Because of the oversized role McCaffrey plays, there's no fantasy football value in this backfield as long as he's healthy, but Davis now gets a pretty big boost as he'd be in line for extended snaps if anything should happen to McCaffrey. He's a late-round target for managers with McCaffrey, while Bonnafon is no longer an option in redraft.
The Carolina Panthers signed running back Reggie Bonnafon to a one-year extension on Tuesday. Bonnafon was the No. 2 behind workhorse Christian McCaffrey in 2019, so he only saw 16 carries for 116 yards and one touchdown over a full season in 2019. He averaged a healthy 7.3 yards per carry, though, and also added six receptions on nine targets for 57 additional yards. If anything were to happen to McCaffrey, Bonnafon would be the biggest beneficiary for touches in Carolina's backfield. Otherwise, he'll just be a low-end fantasy handcuff for those that take McCaffrey No. 1 overall in fall drafts.
Carolina Panthers running back Reggie Bonnafon could see an expanded role on Sunday against Tampa Bay. With Christian McCaffrey (back) potentially unable to play, the 23-year-old may have his number called to serve as the team's No. 1 option against a Buccaneers Defense that has allowed just 69.8 yards per game to the run this season. Bonnafon had 80 yards and a touchdown on five carries after the McCaffrey exited Week 5 with leg cramps and could serve as a semi-adequate replacement for those possibly dealing with the absence of the star running back in Week 6.
Carolina Panthers running back Reggie Bonnafon has impressed offensive coordinator Norv Turner. "Hes probably improved more than anyone on offense over the last year and a half," Turner said. Bonnafon was a waiver pickup this week for those in deeper leagues after he rushed five times for 80 yards and a touchdown in relief of a cramping Christian McCaffrey late in the Week 5 win over the Jaguars. The rookie has just seven carries in two games this year, but he's looking like the best handcuff for McCaffrey owners.
Carolina Panthers running back Reggie Bonnafon rushed for 80 yards and a score off of five attempts against the Jaguars on Sunday. While Christian McCaffrey virtually monopolized the team's offensive attack, the rookie was able to get something going after posting just five yards so far in 2019. Nonetheless, he possesses little fantasy value unless McCaffrey, who exited late in the game with cramps, isn't able to play for some reason against the Buccaneers in Week 6.
