The Carolina Panthers agreed to an undisclosed deal to re-sign linebacker Tae Davis on Friday. Davis began last year with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Panthers in November. The 27-year-old finished the season with just seven tackles (two solo) in 16 games played (zero starts). He was a key special teams contributor for the Panthers in eight games in 2023 and should reprise that role in 2024. Davis entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Chattanooga in 2018 with the New York Giants. In his five years in the league, he's recorded just 64 tackles (44 solo), two sacks, five QB hits and two passes defended in 61 games (five starts). Davis is clearly not on the IDP fantasy radar.
The Houston Texans signed linebacker Tae Davis to a one-year deal on Thursday, according to a league source. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Davis missed all of the 2021 season while on Injured Reserve, but he's healthy now and can be a core special teams contributor for Houston. The 25-year-old played in 13 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2020, registering only seven solo tackles and one pass defensed. In three NFL seasons, Davis has 52 tackles (40 solo), five QB hits and two sacks in 40 games (five starts). Unless injuries hit the position hard in 2022, Davis is unlikely to be a starting option most weeks.
Cleveland Browns free-agent linebacker and special-teamer Tae Davis signed an $8,000 deal with the Houston Texans, according to his agent, David Canter. Davis signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Chattanooga and made the team's active roster while playing in 14 games (four starts) in 2018. The Browns picked him up off waivers in 2019 and he managed to play in nine games to close out the 2019 campaign. In 13 games for Cleveland last season, Davis had seven combined tackles and a pass breakup. The Texans are transitioning from a 3-4 defensive scheme to the Tampa-2 under new defensive coordinator Lovie Smith, and Davis will provide linebacking and special teams depth.
The Cleveland Browns will not extend a tender offer to impending restricted free-agent linebacker/special-teamer Tae Davis, according to a source. Davis will become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year kicks off next Wednesday, March 17. The 24-year-old began his career as an undrafted free agent out of Chattanooga in 2018 and was signed by the New York Giants. He was waived midway through the 2019 season and was claimed by Cleveland, where he's been ever since. Davis played 51 percent of the team's special teams snaps last season and appeared in 13 games. In 40 career NFL games, Davis has 52 total tackles, a pair of passes defensed and two sacks. The Browns could decide to bring him back at a lesser cost.
