The San Francisco 49ers agreed with Indianapolis Colts free-agent defensive back Tavon Wilson on an undisclosed one-year deal on Monday, according to a source. Wilson spent the early portion of his career with the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots. Tarvarius Moore showed some encouraging signs last year for San Francisco, but the Niners had little safety depth otherwise behind Jimmie Ward. Wilson played in a limited role for the Colts last year (just over 200 snaps), but he was a starter for the Lions in 2019. The 31-year-old is likely to serve as depth for San Francisco's secondary behind Moore in 2021. Wilson also has some value on special teams, as he can cover kicks and punts.
Detroit Lions impending free-agent safety Tavon Wilson said he'd be "happy coming back to Detroit," but that he's also looking forward to testing the open market. Wilson had a breakout season in 2019, recording 98 tackles, five passes defensed, a sack and two fumble recoveries in 13 games. Wilson has fit well in head coach Matt Patricia's scheme, so returning to Detroit may be the best thing for his IDP value moving forward. Because of the high number of tackles, he was definitely start-worthy in IDP leagues in 2019.
