Taylor Heinicke News
Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke (shoulder) suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder that caused him to leave the game temporarily in the wild-card loss to the Buccaneers on Saturday night. X-rays came back negative. The 27-year-old made just his second career start against Tampa with Alex Smith (calf) inactive and was impressive, completing 26 of 44 passes for 306 yards, a touchdown and an interception through the air. He also added 46 rushing yards and a touchdown in the 31-23 loss. Heinicke stood in the pocket and made tough throws in the face of pressure and also displayed nice mobility when he had to. If he doesn't remain in D.C. in 2021, Heinicke definitely earned himself a chance to be a backup somewhere else with his play on Saturday night against a tough Bucs defense.
Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke put forth an incredible effort in his second career start, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Buccaneers in the first round of the playoffs. Heinicke, playing for an injured Alex Smith (calf), was 26-for-44 passing for 306 yards and a touchdown. Heinicke's most impressive work, however, was on the ground where he rushed for 46 yards and an incredible touchdown run culminating in a majestic dive to the pylon. It wasn't all good for Heinicke as he threw a pick and had a couple of other should-be turnovers, but overall he played well enough to keep a job in the NFL. As for fantasy, Heinicke isn't someone to chase based on this one performance.
Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith (calf) is inactive for Saturday's wild-card contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. BackupTaylor Heinicke will start at quarterback. Smith gave Washington the best chance of upsetting the Buccaneers, but Heinicke was solid as a relief QB in Week 16 in the loss to the Panthers, going 12-for-19 for 137 yards and a touchdown, adding 22 rushing yards. While this is probably going to go poorly for Washington, there's some deep-sleeper appeal for Heinicke in DFS contests due to his low salary. But he's also attempted just 77 career passes in three NFL seasons with Washington, Houston and Carolina.
