Tim Boyle News
Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Tim Boyle is staying in the NFC North after signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Detroit Lions, according to a source. Boyle receives a $1 million signing bonus and $1.5 million in total guarantees. He spent three years backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. In his new home in Detroit, Boyle will have the chance to be the primary backup behind Jared Goff, who was traded to the Lions in January in exchange for Matthew Stafford. Boyle completed three passes for 15 yards in 11 games for the Packers in the last two seasons, mostly to come into the game and kneel. But he has an intriguing skill set with a big arm and playmaking ability from the pocket. With Boyle now gone in Green Bay, Jordan Love, the team's first-round pick in 2020, will be the backup to Rodgers in 2021 after being inactive all of last year.
The Green Bay Packers will not tender impending restricted free-agent quarterback Tim Boyle, which seemingly moves Jordan Love up as Aaron Rodgers' primary backup to enter the 2021 season. Boyle will become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins next Wednesday. The move means that the Packers could be comfortable with Love, their 2020 first-round pick, backing up Rodgers this year after he was third on the QB depth chart in his rookie season. Boyle made the active roster as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and was Rodgers' primary backup the last two seasons. He appeared in 11 games, mostly in mop-up duty late in games. Boyle doesn't have much experience, but he has a big arm and some playmaking abilities within the pocket.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Tim Boyle has really impressed the team during training camp and appears to have a leg up as Aaron Rodgers' backup over first-rounder Jordan Love. "Hes proven himself day-in and day-out. Glad we have him. Again, with Aaron back there, you hope you never have to go that route. But if we did, I feel very confident we can win games with Tim Boyle," general manager Brian Gutekunst said. Boyle has completed 60 of 110 passes for 650 yards and nine touchdowns and only two interceptions for a passer rating of 91.9 over the last two preseasons. The odds are stacked against Love with organized team activities and preseason games this year wiped out due to COVID-19. Boyle doesn't have much regular season experience, but he's spent a full year in head coach Matt LaFleur's offensive system. It's further evidence that Love doesn't warrant a roster spot in redraft leagues in 2020.
