Tim Boyle News
New York Jets quarterback Tim Boyle was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday's showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. With Aaron Rodgers (Achilles) sidelined, the Jets needed someone to back up Zach Wilson, who is expected to remain under center. But Boyle hasn't seen much action since entering the league in 2018, appearing in 17 games and throwing three touchdowns and eight picks off 62.3% passing. It seems New York won't sign a veteran free agent, at least at the moment. However, Boyle hasn't proven he can be trusted, so that may change if Wilson gets injured moving ahead.
The New York Jets signed veteran free-agent quarterback Tim Boyle to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to a source. Boyle will be reunited with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who served as an offensive coordinator previously with the Green Bay Packers. The Jets also have former first-rounder Zach Wilson as a backup option in New York, but they're fully expected to eventually finalize a trade to land Packers future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers. Given Wilson's struggles in his first couple years with the Jets, it's totally possible that Boyle has a shot to supplant him as the primary backup to Rodgers in 2023. The 28-year-old has played in 17 games (three starts) in four NFL seasons with the Packers (2019-20), Detroit Lions (2021) and Chicago Bears (2022).
Chicago Bears quarterback Nathan Peterman has returned to Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, sending Tim Boyle back to the bench. The Bears' plan was to rotate their quarterbacks in and out of the game, which explains why Peterman exited and re-entered. It remains to be seen if Boyle will take another snap in this contest. If he doesn't, his final Week 18 stat line includes two completions, 33 yards, and one interception.
