Tyrann Mathieu Underrated As A Run-Defender

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu played 98 percent of the defensive snaps (1,205 of 1,230) last year, including the playoffs, according to Next Gen Stats. Known for his work mostly as a pass-defender, Mathieu's run-stopping ability ranked seventh-best among safeties in 2019. The Honey Badger was even better against the run in previous seasons with the Cardinals and Texans. His ability to play both the run and pass makes him extremely valuable to both Kansas City and fantasy owners in IDP leagues. The 28-year-old is entering his second year with the Chiefs in 2020 and had 75 tackles (63 solo), two sacks, four interceptions and 12 passes defensed last season, earning him his second first-team All-Pro nod.

Tyrann Mathieu Crucial To Chiefs Success

Kansas City Chiefs free safety Tyrann Mathieu's average separation yards of 3.4 leaves something to be desired in coverage, and so does his catch rate allowed below expectation (minus-7.5), but he was crucial in the Chiefs Super Bowl run from a year ago. He had a passer rating allowed of 57.6, but his ballhawk rate of 17.1 percent is an indication of how effective he is in KC's secondary. The Honey Badger compiled 75 tackles (63 solo), two sacks, four interceptions and 12 passes defensed on his way to his second first-team All-Pro selection in his seven seasons in the league. Mathieu may not have the best numbers from a pure analytical perspective, but he gets it done nevertheless and is a fringe starter at defensive back in IDP leagues.

Chiefs Agree To Terms With Tyrann Mathieu

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with free-agent safety Tyrann Mathieu (Texans) on a three-year, $42 million contract, a source said Monday. The Chiefs landed their top target off of the free-agent market. The Honey Badger gives the Chiefs some help against the pass, an area they were sorely lacking in 2018. Kansas City ranked a dismal 31st against the pass, allowing 273.4 yards per game through the air with 30 passing touchdowns and 65 pass plays of 20 or more yards. If the Chiefs are going to be a legit championship contender they need to be better on defense. Mathieu's addition is a start, but the Chiefs DST is still a shaky fantasy option.
