Pittsburgh Penguins center Jeff Carter potted two goals, including the game-winning marker, in Wednesday's impressive 5-2 road victory over the Avalanche. The veteran hit a power-play goal in the second period and added an even-strength tally in the third. These are Carter's first goals since Feb. 26. The 38-year-old has struggled for form and his ice time has nosedived in recent outings, with Carter even getting limited to only 6:30 of action in the previous game. However, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan got a great reaction out of Carter Wednesday night. Sitting on 11 goals and 15 assists through 68 outings, Carter is averaging a career-low 0.38 points per game this season.

He has been on the shelf for three games with a lower-body problem, but it appears that the veteran is getting ready to return to the lineup, as he has ditched the non-contact jersey in practice. Carter centered the third line in Tuesday's practice and also worked on the second power-play unit. The 37-year-old has done reasonably well so far this season, notching two goals and four assists in nine appearances.

Pittsburgh plays again Wednesday versus Buffalo, so it's possible Carter sits out multiple games. The veteran has enjoyed some good form this season, getting two goals and four assists in nine outings. Based on the morning skate, it looks like Carter will give up the third-line center spot to Drew O'Connor, who will make his season debut on Tuesday. He has managed six points in eight AHL appearances this season.
