Brandon Phillips Still Hoping To Play This Season

Currently a free agent, former All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips is still holding out hope that he may play in the major leagues this season. The 37-year-old played in nine games for the Boston Red Sox last season after signing in June. Phillips is maintaining his shape as he awaits a possible call, perhaps just like last season with Boston. Considering the litany of injuries that have already taken place around the league, it may not be inconceivable for Phillips to sign with a team this year.

Brandon Phillips To Work Out At First Base

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said second baseman Brandon Phillips will start working out at first base. The veteran hit a two-run, game-winning homer to help beat the Braves 9-8 in an epic comeback on Wednesday. The 37-year-old has mostly played second base in his 17-year career, but he's made 24 starts at third base and two starts at shortstop. First baseman Mitch Moreland has hit .183 with a .594 OPS in 33 games since the All-Star break while battling through injuries. Phillips hit .302 with an .824 OPS at Triple-A Pawtucket before his call-up. He's probably still a long shot to make the team's postseason roster, but he has several weeks to prove he's worthy. Phillips still probably isn't anything more than AL-only depth to close out the season.

Brandon Phillips Smacks Go-Ahead Homer In Red Sox Debut

Boston Red Sox second baseman Brandon Phillips came through in the clutch in his Red Sox debut on Wednesday. With the Red Sox down 8-7 in the top of the ninth inning, Phillips belted a two-run shot which put his squad in the lead for good. Phillips also drew two walks in the game. The best-case scenario for Phillips is that he earns semi-regular playing time for the rest of the season, but due to the depth of the Red Sox, he is not a viable fantasy option.

Red Sox To Activate Rafael Devers, Add Brandon Phillips

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (hamstring) will be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, and the team will also recall second baseman Brandon Phillips from the minors. Devers has hit .242 with 16 home runs, 55 RBI and five steals as the team's main third baseman this year. He should return to regular starts at the hot corner this week. Phillips has hit .304/.348/.474 with five home runs between Single-A Lowell and Triple-A Pawtucket. He'll be a nice veteran bench piece for the BoSox down the stretch but won't carry much fantasy value.

Brandon Phillips Will Play Third Base in Minors

Earlier Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox signed former All-Star Brandon Phillips to a minor league deal. There was speculation that the signing was due to Dustin Pedroia's injury, but this is not the case. Phillips was not signed because of a dire injury prognosis. Phillips will be starting at third base for Triple-A Pawtucket once he is in playing shape. The move is simply for added organizational depth and gives the team a veteran bat to call on late in the season. With that being said, Phillips should not be on any fantasy radars unless he is called up to the Red Sox.

Brandon Phillips Signs Minor League Deal

Veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips has signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. Phillips turns 37 on Thursday but is coming off a solid season in 2017. Surprisingly, he was not signed during the offseason, but the Red Sox are giving him an opportunity because of Dustin Pedroia's knee injury. Phillips will head to Triple-A for now but could help the Red Sox later in the season. He belongs on the waiver wire in all leagues until/if he's called up.

Free-Agent Brandon Phillips Has "Strong Desire" to Play in 2018

MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports that free-agent second baseman Brandon Phillips "has a strong desire to continue playing at age 36." Last season with the Braves and Angels, Phillips had 13 home runs and 11 steals with a .285 average and .735 on-base plus slugging percentage. He's averaged 12 HRs and 16 steals with a .290 batting average over the last three years, and if he can latch on with another team, he could provide value in 12-team or deeper leagues.

Brandon Phillips Returns to Lineup on Tuesday

Angels second baseman Brandon Phillips (back) is back in the lineup, playing second base and batting leadoff. Phillips took a few days off to rest his ailing back, but appears to be all set moving forward. The 36-year-old has posted 11 home runs and 11 steals on the season and should be rostered in most fantasy formats for the rest of the season, as long as he stays healthy and atop the Angels lineup.

Brandon Phillips is Day-to-Day with Back Tightness

Angels second baseman Brandon Phillips (back) is not in the lineup for Saturday's game. He is listed as day-to-day, but the Angels hope he can return to the lineup on Sunday. Cliff Pennington will play second base in his absence. Phillips has been hitting atop the Angels lineup since being traded from the Braves in late-August, and is hitting .333 with two RBI over the last week. He is worth a roster spot in most fantasy formats as long as he is atop the lineup in LA.

Brandon Phillips Waives No-Trade Clause For Second Time, Joins Angels

The Los Angeles Angels acquired second baseman Brandon Phillips from the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline Thurday in exchange for Triple-A catcher Tony Sanchez, according to sources. It was the Angels' second trade of the day -- they earlier acquired Justin Upton from the Detroit Tigers. Phillips, who was hitting a cool .291 with Atlanta with 11 homers and 52 RBI, is likely to serve as the everyday second baseman. The 36-year-old still contributes in the average department for fantasy owners but not much else. However, he'll receive a slight fantasy boost with this move to a more potent lineup. Kaleb Cowart effectively becomes a bench player in Anaheim now.
