Marlins Option Valente Bellozo, Brett de Geus

The Miami Marlins optioned right-handed pitchers Valente Bellozo and Brett de Geus to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday and reassigned right-hander Josh Ekness to minor-league camp. Bellozo lost out on the competition for a starting-rotation spot in camp by giving up 10 runs in 8 1/3 innings of work in the Grapefruit League. To begin the season, the 25-year-old Mexican hurler will serve as starting depth in the minors. Bellozo made his big-league debut in 2024 and went 3-4 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 44 K's and 21 walks in 68 2/3 innings over 13 starts for the Fish. The 27-year-old de Geus also didn't perform well in spring training, getting hit around to the tune of six runs in just 2 2/3 innings in the Grapefruit League. de Geus spent 2024 with three different teams and had an ERA above 7.00 in just 11 1/3 inning. He'll open in the minor as relief depth for Miami.

Marlins Claim Brett De Geus Off Waivers

The Miami Marlins have claimed right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus off waivers. In a corresponding move, the team designated right-handed pitcher Seth Martinez for assignment, who they claimed off waivers last week. De Geus was traded to Pittsburgh earlier this offseason but will return to the Marlins, with whom he spent time earlier in his career. Last season, the 27-year-old spent time with three MLB clubs, including Miami, and logged a cumulative 11 1/3 innings of relief across 13 games. He allowed nine earned runs and held a 4:7 BB:K ratio. Last summer, De Geus logged 39 innings at the Triple-A level to the tune of a 5.31 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. He tallied just 27 punchouts and served up 14 free passes. Fantasy managers should expect De Geus to compete for a low-leverage relief role during spring training.

Brett de Geus Traded To Pittsburgh

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet, the Toronto Blue Jays have traded right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. De Geus was designated for assignment earlier this offseason but will now take his career to Pittsburgh. Last summer, de Geus logged just 11 2/3 innings at the major league level and posted a 7.15 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. He struck out just seven batters and allowed four free passes. Through 39 innings at Triple-A last season, de Geus posted a 5.31 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. The 27-year-old will enter spring training competing for a spot in the Pittsburgh bullpen but will likely open the campaign with Triple-A Indianapolis, given his lack of proven success and experience in the major leagues.

Brett de Geus Designated For Assignment

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet, the Toronto Blue Jays have designated right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus for assignment. This transaction opened a roster spot for right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman. De Geus logged 11 1/3 innings at the major league level last season. Across this small stint, he posted a hefty 7.15 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. De Geus spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons in the minor leagues after making his major league debut in 2021. During his debut season, the right-hander held a similar 7.56 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP. Across 50 career frames at the Triple-A level, the 27-year-old has held a 6.66 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. Fantasy managers should expect him to spend most of the 2025 campaign in Triple-A, given his lack of proven success in the major leagues.

Blue Jays Claim Brett de Geus Off Waivers From The Marlins

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed right-hander Brett de Geus off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo. de Geus will give the Blue Jays some extra relief depth in the minors for the rest of the 2024 season. The 26-year-old former 33rd-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 out of Cabrillo College has appeared in 11 combined games in relief for the Seattle Mariners and Marlins this year, allowing six earned runs (five earned) on 11 hits while walking two and striking out six in nine innings pitched. de Geus made his major-league debut in 2021 with the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks but didn't resurface in the majors until this year. In his 59 relief innings in the big leagues, he has a 7.17 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with 47 K's and 27 walks in 58 appearances out of the bullpen.

Jake Vogel, Brett de Geus Added To Player Pool

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Jake Vogel and right-handed pitcher Brett De Geus were added to the summer camp player pool on Thursday. de Geus was a spring training non-roster invitee, while Vogel, just 18 years old, was the team's third-round pick in June out of Huntington Beach High School. The Dodgers are adding Vogel to the roster strictly for development purposes, as he has virtually no shot at playing in the big leagues straight out of high school. The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder was one of the fastest players in this year's draft class, and he also has a simple swing from the right side of the plate. Vogel could develop some more pop despite his undersized frame, but speed will be his biggest asset if he becomes a regular at the big league level.
