Marlins Acquire Burch Smith From Rays

The Miami Marlins acquired right-hander Burch Smith from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. Smith had an assignment clause in his minor-league contract, and the Rays didn't have a spot for him on their major-league roster out of spring training. The Marlins selected Smith's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville after the trade. The 33-year-old last pitched in the majors in 2021 with the Oakland Athletics, posting a 5.40 ERA (4.21 FIP) and 1.38 WHIP with 11 walks and 28 strikeouts in 43 1/3 relief innings. He'll be completely off the fantasy radar in what's expected to be a long-relief role for the Fish. In five big-league seasons, Smith has a poor 6.03 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP, one save, 87 walks and 184 strikeouts in 191 innings pitched.

Burch Smith Unlikely To Return For A’s In 2020

Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Burch Smith is not likely to be cleared to return for the club this season after having sustained a forearm strain last week. Manager Bob Melvin provided an update Thursday, saying that he believed that it would be tough for Smith to make it back this season. Smith had quickly become one of the clubs vital cogs in its relief corps, having opened the year with five consecutive scoreless appearances. He secured his first big league save in addition to vulturing two wins, which gave him deep league appeal which has since dissipated.

Burch Smith Lands On IL, James Kaprielian Called Up

Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Burch Smith has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained right forearm, paving the way for righty James Kaprielian, the clubs No. 13 prospect, to earn the call to the Major League roster. Smith had yet to be scored upon in 2020 prior to his outing Saturday; prior to his exit, he struck out three batters, giving him 13 Ks through 12 IP this year. Kaprielian boasts a power arm in his own right, having averaged 10.3 K/9 across three Minor League seasons. After having recovered from Tommy John surgery, Kaprielian is an intriguing keepers league asset at this stage, although his current role with Oakland will likely come out of relief.

Burch Smith Exits With Injury After Scoreless Streak Snapped

Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Burch Smith entered play Saturday against the Giants not yet having allowed a run in 2020. Before his night was done, he would yield three runs and exit due to injury with righty Lou Trivino taking over for him. Smith has turned himself into a staple of the Oakland relief corps, having earned his first career save last Sunday with zero runs allowed in his first 10 frames. His fastball velocity dipped abruptly during his second inning of work, which could indicate an arm injury, especially as he did display any ailment walking off the mound. A deep season-long option due to his multi-inning flexibility, Smith is likely facing a stint on the injured list, which would zap him of any value at this stage.

Burch Smith Being Demoted To Bullpen

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Burch Smith is being moved to the bullpen in favor of Jorge Lopez, who will start against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Lopez was acquired in the trade that sent third baseman Mike Moustakas to the Brewers. In his last three starts, Smith allowed 18 hits (five home runs) and 16 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings to raise his season ERA to 6.97. He's obviously not a fantasy option. Lopez, a right-hander, had a 2.75 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 6.9 K/9 in 19 2/3 relief outings for the Brewers, but he hasn't pitched very well in a starting role in the minors. Lopez will be one to avoid as a streamer on Wednesday.

Burch Smith Chased In Second Inning

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Burch Smith got roasted again on Friday as he was run out in the second inning after already giving up five earned runs. Smith has now given up five or more earned runs in three straight starts, and his season ERA sits at a frightening 6.97. Smith was a feel-good story after a long absence from the majors, but the team's experiment with using his as a starter has failed miserably. Smith had seemed to have found his groove as a reliever in June and had five straight scoreless appearances before the conversion, but he's since posted a 9.67 ERA in six starts.

Burch Smith Tames Tigers For MLB Record

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Burch Smith posted a stellar outing against Detroit on Tuesday to pick up his first major league win since 2013. It was also a record-setting performance for lowly Kansas City because it made the third-straight day in which a rookie started a game and went six innings while allowing three hits or fewer and striking out six in the performance. Apparently, that was a major league first. Smith has had some ups and downs so far as he's being transitioned into a starter, but he's worth keeping an eye on for now.

Burch Smith To Start Sunday

Kansas City Royals pitcher Burch Smith will start on Sunday against the White Sox in what will be a bullpen day for the Royals, according to manager Ned Yost. Smith is expected to go around three innings. The right-hander has appeared in 25 games this year, including one start, and has a 5.83 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 9.3 K/9. In his lone start last Wednesday, Smith allowed four earned runs on seven hits in just 3 1/3 innings to the Twins. It's safe to say he's not a fantasy option as a streamer in this one.

Burch Smith Takes No-Decision In First Start

Kansas City Royals pitcher Burch Smith made his first major league start in five years on Wednesday, and he was rewarded by watching his bullpen blow a lead. After 3 1/3 innings for Smith, he exited the game with two runners on so reliever Glenn Sparkman could work out of the jam. Instead, Sparkman allowed a double and three runs to score after slinging a ball down the right field line on an errant throw to first. Smith has recently been lights out in relief, so it's expected that he'll continue to get some more starts in the future. No one should expect him to go very deep into games at the moment though.

Burch Smith Dominant In Long Relief Outing

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Burch Smith was another Rule 5 pick up by KC over the winter, and he's suddenly earning his keep. Smith came in to face the Red Sox in the third inning of Friday's blowout loss, but instead of allowing the bombardment to continue, Smith shut down the best team in baseball for four innings. Smith allowed just two hits and struck out three over the four-inning stretch, and he's now rocking a 10-inning scoreless streak. Pitching for a team whose rotation is as bad as KC's could open up the possibility of Smith getting converted into a starter, but whether he can keep up this kind of performance remains to be seen. He's at least worth watching while he's hot.
