The Chicago Cubs are in the process of cutting minor league players, and that includes second baseman Carlos Asuaje and relief pitcher Brock Stewart. Asuaje was last in the big leagues with the Padres in 2018 and hit .196 in 79 games. Stewart was taken in the Rule 5 draft and owns a career 6.05 ERA in four seasons between the Dodgers and Blue Jays.
San Diego Padres second baseman Carlos Asuaje was designated for assignment on Friday to make room for newly-signed starting pitcher Garrett Richards on the 40-man roster. The move likely concludes Asuajes three-year stint with the Padres where he slashed .240/.312/.329 across 586 plate appearances. With Luis Urias projected as the starting second baseman for 2019, the move isnt unexpected. It could also mean the arrival of shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is more imminent than previously thought. Asuaje could land with another squad but his long-term role as a major leaguer is uncertain.
San Diego Padres second baseman Carlos Asuaje reached base in all four plate appearances, scoring two runs in Thursdays victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Asuaje was a jolt for the sputtering Padres offense, recording a triple, single and two walks. Prior to his call-up on July 1, the 26-year-old infielder was slashing .338/.408/.492 in Triple-A El Paso. Asuaje is 5-for-7 with a 4:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio since his return. The Padres have been getting minimal production from second baseman Jose Pirela (.658 OPS, -0.6 WAR) and Asuaje deserves more opportunities to test the sustainability of his improved plate approach. For now, consider him a fantasy long shot but if he continues getting on base, Asuaje could be a keystone candidate in deep and NL-only leagues.
The San Diego Padres are recalling infielder Carlos Asuaje from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Asuaje broke Spring Training with the Friars but was optioned after hitting .193 in 121 plate appearances. A natural second baseman, Asuaje learned the ropes of third base in the minors and will bring additional versatility to San Diego's infield. Assuming a bench role upon his return, Asuaje isn't a fantasy consideration. In a corresponding move, outfielder Matt Szczur was designated for assignment. Playing sparingly with only 84 plate appearances, Szczur became expendable with the return of outfielder Wil Myers.
Carlos Asuaje And Cory Spangenberg Fighting For Roster Spot
San Diego Padres manager Andy Green hinted the loser of the second base battle between Carlos Asuaje and Cory Spangenberg may not make the final roster. Due to crowded outfield and pitching situations, the Padres likely do not have room for two left-handed hitting second basemen. Additionally, right-handed Jose Pirela, who can play outfield and second, has a secure roster spot. Asuaje and Spangenberg profile similarly, with Spangenberg demonstrating better pop and speed while Asuaje has superior plate discipline and defense. For the spring, Asuaje has a .333 average with seven RBI while Spangenberg is hitting .235 with a homer. Of course, this could all be moot if prospect Luis Urias (or even Fernando Tatis Jr.) gets called up sooner than later.
San Diego Padres second baseman Carlos Asuaje and catcher Austin Hedges are not in the lineup Tuesday. Make sure to get these players out of any daily lineups. Yangervis Solarte is starting at second base and is hitting fifth, while Luis Torrens is catching and batting eighth against Dodgers starter Alex Wood. Solarte, a switch hitter, is batting only .208 with two of his 18 homers against left-handers like Wood this year, so both he and Torrens are weak DFS plays this evening.
Carlos Asuaje Keeps Providing Average, Not Much Else
San Diego second baseman Carlos Asuaje went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored against the Cardinals. It drove his batting average up to .293 over 191 at-bats in his rookie season. Asuaje has held down the second base job formidably with his bat and glove. Unfortunately, from a fantasy standpoint he doesn't offer much else besides average. His latest RBI was just his 14th and he only has a pair of homers, with no steals. NL-only owners could use Asuaje in a pinch, but his mixed league value just isn't there yet.
Carlos Asuaje Drives in Two, Making Most of Opportunity to Start
San Diego second baseman Carlos Asuaje seems to finally be warming up to the Major Leagues. The second baseman, who is starting every day in place of injured Yangervis Solarte (oblique), went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs on Wednesday. Asuaje is now hitting .316 in 38 at-bats since being called up after struggling in last year's brief audition. He hit .321 in Triple-A last season and is certainly capable of delivering average, but hitting eighth in San Diego limits his overall potential to score or drive in runs.
Carlos Asuaje Picks Up First Two Hits of the Season in San Diego
San Diego second baseman Carlos Asuaje went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored on Saturday. It was his first two hits as a Padre this year, although he's only had eight at-bats so far. Asuaje consistently hit for average and scored runs in the minors, so the team is hoping he can provide a spark at the No. 2 spot in the lineup while Yangervis Solarte (oblique) is out. He won't bring power or speed to the table, making him of limited use in most leagues, outside of deep points leagues.
Carlos Asuaje Back Up to Replace Ailing Yangervis Solarte
San Diego recalled second baseman Carlos Asuaje on Friday as a replacement for injured Yangervis Solarte (oblique), who is on the 10-day disabled list. He batted second and finished 0-for-3 against the Tigers. Asuaje hasn't had much fortune in his limited Major League experience, but he has shown exemplary plate discipline in the minors with 40 walks compared to 33 strikeouts in Triple-A this season. He should handle the starting job while Solarte heals.
