Carson Whisenhunt Coming Up to Start for Giants on Thursday

San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello told KNBR that left-handed pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt is being called up from Triple-A Sacramento to start on Thursday in the series finale against the division-rival Colorado Rockies at Oracle Park. The 25-year-old former second-rounder in 2022 out of East Carolina University is considered the Giants' No. 11-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He struggled to a 5.01 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with 16 strikeouts and 12 walks in 23 1/3 innings over five starts in his MLB debut in 2025. In his lone start this year for the Gigantes on June 17 against the first-place Atlanta Braves, he picked up a win, allowing two earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two in five innings of work. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is most likely just making another spot start for San Fran in the final weekend of the regular season, so fantasy managers in single-year leagues shouldn't be spending a ton on him to pick him up off the waiver wire. In 77 1/3 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this year at Sacramento, Whisenhunt holds a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 82:37 K:BB.

Carson Whisenhunt Coming Up to Start on Thursday?

The San Francisco Giants are listing TBA for Thursday night's game against the division-rival Colorado Rockies, and the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser suggests it seems like where left-handed pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt would slot in. Manager Tony Vitello has not committed to Whisenhunt returning to make his second start in the big leagues this year on Thursday, but he acknowledged that the southpaw is a candidate to start before next week's All-Star break. If Whisenhunt comes up from Triple-A Sacramento, it would push all of Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, and Trevor McDonald to the final three games of the first half of the season. In his lone start with the Giants this year on June 17 against the Atlanta Braves, Whisenhunt gave up two runs while walking two and striking out two in five innings. The 25-year-old has posted a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 82:37 K:BB in 77 1/3 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this year on the farm. Per MLB Pipeline, he's San Fran's No. 11 prospect, and the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder has one of the best changeups among all pitching prospects. Because he could just be a spot starter for the Giants once again to close out the first half, fantasy managers in redraft leagues won't want to spend too much to acquire him if he returns this week.

Carson Whisenhunt's Velocity Up This Spring

San Francisco Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt was consistently hitting 96-97 mph during his simulated game in camp on Thursday, according to Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News. Whisenhunt's average fastball velocity last year was at 92.6 mph, so it's a notable development early in spring training as he heads into his second major-league season. The 25-year-old former second-round pick in 2022 out of East Carolina University made five starts in his big-league debut in 2025 and allowed 14 runs (13 earned) in 23 1/3 innings (5.01) ERA while walking 12 and striking out 16. Whisenhunt will most likely start the 2026 season at Triple-A Sacramento to continue his development. Command and control were both issues in his small sample size with the Giants last year. His future in the big leagues could be in the bullpen if those issues don't improve.

Carson Whisenhunt Shaky in First Rehab Start

San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt (back) made his first rehab appearance at Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. The Giants' seventh-ranked prospect allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out only one batter in 1 2/3 innings of work. Not only that, but the 24-year-old also threw two wild pitches in the outing. It's not clear if he'll get any more work down there before rejoining the big league club, but the Triple-A regular season ends on Sunday. The Giants could use the reinforcements as they are just two games back in the Wild Card, although the left-hander could be a risky proposition for the fantasy playoffs. The southpaw recorded a 5.01 ERA (6.92 FIP), 1.46 WHIP, and a 3.9 percent K-BB% in five starts for San Francisco before the injury.

Carson Whisenhunt to Begin Rehab Assignment on Tuesday

San Francisco Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (back) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento and throw two innings on Tuesday. The rookie has been on the 15-day injured list with a back strain since Aug. 28, and he could rejoin a shorthanded Giants rotation when he returns. The Giants are also without Landen Roupp (knee), who suffered a season-ending knee injury in late August, leaving them scrambling to fill in their rotation as they vie for an NL wild-card spot. They'll start reliever Tristan Beck in a crucial game against the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Whisenhunt, 24, has gone 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and 16:12 K:BB over five starts and 23 1/3 innings since he received his first promotion to the majors in late July.

Carson Whisenhunt Could Be Nearing Return From Injured List

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Carson Whisenhunt (back) could be ready to return from the 15-day injured list soon, per SF Chronicle's Susan Slusser. Whisenhunt was placed on the IL retroactive to August 28 with a back strain. The 24-year-old prospect was not having the most successful first stint in the big leagues, going 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and a 15.7% strikeout rate in five starts and 23 1/3 innings pitched. He does carry some fantasy appeal in dynasty leagues, but his fantasy appeal will be limited for the rest of this season if he is able to return in time.

Carson Whisenhunt Heads to 15-Day Injured List

The San Francisco Giants have placed left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (back) on the 15-day injured list with a back strain, retroactive to Aug. 28. To take his place, the Giants recalled righty Kai-Wei Teng from Triple-A Sacramento. Manager Bob Melvin said that Whisenhunt woke up with tightness in his back earlier this week, and the issue has bothered him when he has tried to throw off a mound. The 24-year-old former second-round pick (2022) earned a promotion to the majors in late July and has made five starts since then. Whisenhunt has struggled to a 5.01 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP, 16 strikeouts, and 12 walks in his first 23 1/3 innings in the bigs. Teng will start in his place on Monday against the Colorado Rockies.

Carson Whisenhunt to Start on Friday Against Brewers

With San Francisco Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (knee) headed to the 15-day injured list with a knee sprain, MLB.com's Justice delos Santos reports that rookie right-hander Carson Whisenhunt will be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to start in Friday's series opener against the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. Whisenhunt, the team's No. 7 prospect per MLB Pipeline, made his major-league debut earlier in 2025 and struggled in three starts against the Pirates, Mets and Nationals, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits (five homers) while walking seven and striking out 12 over 14 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old is going to need to throw more strikes and hit better spots in his return to the majors, but he could stick around for the rest of the year in San Fran's rotation if Roupp can't make it back. We'd suggest avoiding Whisenhunt as a fantasy streamer against Milwaukee in his return to MLB.

Carson Whisenhunt Struggles Early in Debut for Giants

San Francisco Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt struggled early in his major league debut Monday against a weak Pittsburgh Pirates lineup. The Giants' top pitching prospect completed five innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out three. Command was an issue, as Whisenhunt threw just 49 of 85 pitches for strikes, walking two and allowing five hits. He struggled in the first two innings but settled in by the third, tossing three scoreless frames to finish his outing. Despite his effort, the Giants dropped the game 6-5. Whisenhunt will likely face much tougher competition in his next start against the New York Mets.

Carson Whisenhunt Promoted, Starting Monday

San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt is coming up to the majors to make his debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, manager Bob Melvin announced. A second-round pick in 2022, the left-handed Whisenhunt now ranks as the Giants' third-best prospect at MLB Pipeline. Whisenhunt has spent the season with Triple-A Sacramento in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and posted a 4.42 ERA with 88 strikeouts and 28 walks over 97 2/3 innings. While those aren't great numbers, the Giants are lacking starting options behind the strong duo of Logan Webb and Robbie Ray and the declining Justin Verlander. They lost Landen Roupp (elbow) to the 15-day injured list earlier this week, and Hayden Birdsong isn't eligible to return to the majors yet after the team just optioned him to Triple-A on July 22. The Giants will now turn to Whisenhunt, who at least has a favorable matchup for his first start. The Pirates rank last in the majors in runs, and their .270 wOBA against lefties also sits at the bottom of the league.
