Giants Reassign Carson Whisenhunt To Minor-League Camp

The San Francisco Giants have reassigned their top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt to minor-league camp. The former second-round draft pick made two appearances for the Giants this spring, throwing three innings of scoreless ball while yielding one hit, no walks, and striking out two. The 6-foot-3 hurler registered a 5.42 ERA in his first taste of Triple-A last year but struck out 135 batters in 104 2/3 innings, good for an 11.61 K/9. However, a high walk rate led to just a 17.2 percent K-BB%. The southpaw has an 80-grade changeup that Giants fans would surely like to see in the majors, but for now, they'll have to wait. Assuming the 24-year-old starts off well in 2025, it wouldn't be surprising to see him knocking on the door to the majors by midseason. With the strikeout potential, redraft managers should stay vigilant for any indications of a call-up.

Carson Whisenhunt On The Rehab Trail

San Francisco Giants left-handed pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt (foot), who was placed on the seven-day minor-league injured list on July 24 with a sore foot, began a rehab assignment with Single-A San Joe on Aug. 13, striking out six over five scoreless innings in his first two starts. The 23-year-old, who is considered by MLB Pipeline to be the team's No. 4 prospect, has struggled in his first year with Triple-A Sacramento, posting a 5.84 ERA in 19 starts, although he does have 102 strikeouts in 77 innings. He made his last start for the River Cats on July 13 and gave up three runs over four innings with seven strikeouts. Whisenhunt could rejoin Sacramento's starting rotation soon to close out the year. The 6-foot-3, 209-pounder's plus-plus changeup helps him get a lot of swings and misses, but he's going to need to show better command and control if he's going to have extended success in what is expected to be his major-league debut in 2025.

Carson Whisenhunt Continues To Rack Up K's

San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt put together a quality start in his most recent outing for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday. The lefty tossed six innings in the contest and allowed four hits, three runs, one walk and struck out seven on the evening. Whisenhunt has had an up-and-down season with a 5.79 ERA and an unimpressive 1.63 WHIP, but he also had his positives with 95 strikeouts in 73 innings. The Giants have dealt with plenty of injuries at the big-league level this season, but have chosen to go with a lot of bullpen contests versus calling up a prospect, such as Whisenhunt. Should the Giants change their course of action, Whisenhunt would be a strong candidate to be the next man up. His strikeouts are intriguing, but his inconsistency makes him more of a streaming option, should he be promoted to the big leagues in 2024.

Carson Whisenhunt Tosses Four Shutout Frames On Wednesday

San Francisco Giants starting pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt tossed 4 1/3 shutout frames with seven punchouts, five hits, and two free passes on Wednesday evening. Whisenhunt has struggled at times through his first look at Triple-A ball this season but has recently begun to find his footing. In his past three starts, he has posted a stellar 1.72 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and a 7:17 BB:K. Through 61 total frames, he carries a 4.87 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, and a 33:82 BB:K. The No. 66 prospect on MLB Pipeline has progressed through the minor leagues very quickly, as he started in Single-A and finished the season in Double-A last summer. He is currently on pace to make his major-league debut later this summer. The 23-year-old southpaw is an intriguing stash candidate in dynasty leagues and could be worth rostering in redraft leagues during the second half of the season.

Carson Whisenhunt Strikes Out Seven In Latest Start

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher prospect Carson Whisenhunt fanned seven batters in five innings for Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. The lefty allowed two earned runs on five hits while walking just one, although he also hit two batters. The strikeouts have been there this season for the former second-round draft pick, with 62 punchouts in 40 1/3 innings pitched, but the southpaw owns a 6.02 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 11 starts. Hopefully this is the start of something good for the Giants' top pitching prospect who still might see the big leagues this season, and with the big strikeout potential fantasy managers should continue to keep him on the radar.

Carson Whisenhunt Strikes Out Seven In Tuesday's Victory

San Francisco Giants starting pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt tossed three 2/3 shutout innings with three hits, two free passes, and seven punchouts in Tuesday's victory. This was a big bounce back for the number two prospect in the San Francisco system, as he has allowed 14 earned runs in his past three starts. The southpaw now sits with an 8.79 ERA and 2.09 WHIP across 14 1/3 innings with 24 strikeouts to begin the season. The 23-year-old has flashed at times but has struggled just as much, which will delay his eventual MLB debut. Nonetheless, Whisenhunt is projected to be promoted later in the season as the Giants look to compete for the NL West.

Carson Whisenhunt Shines In Season Debut

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher prospect Carson Whisenhunt excelled in his first start of the season for Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. The lefty tossed three innings and allowed one hit with no runs, no walks and six strikeouts. He also had an impressive 12 swings and misses. Despite a slow start to the offseason with an elbow injury, Whisenhunt shined in his first start of the season and continues to trend up from this past season, that saw him post a 2.45 ERA in 58 2/3 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. The lengthy lefty spent this offseason working on his health, command, and curveball to go along with already plus changeup and sinker. Developing a third pitch can do wonders and it has already paid off in one appearance. The Giants are in it to win it in a tough NL West division and should not be shy about promoting Whisenhunt this season. If promoted, he would be worth rostering with his immense talent and favorable home ballpark.

Carson Whisenhunt To Face Live Hitters Thursday

San Francisco Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (elbow) will face live hitters on Thursday. He has been slow-played during the early portion of spring training after an elbow sprain ended his season early in 2023. A second-round pick in the 2022 MLB draft, Whisenhunt was excellent across three minor-league levels last season, finishing with six starts of 3.20 ERA ball at the Double-A level. He also posted a tidy 1.42 ERA across six starts at High-A. The Giants also have right-hander Sean Hjelle on the shelf due to an elbow sprain, and he is set to be evaluated in two weeks. Whisenhunt is likely to open the season back at Double-A but could be a factor in the Giants' rotation in short order.

Carson Whisenhunt Strikes Out Eight

San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt continued his early-season dominance with four-and-a-third innings of no-hit baseball for High-A Eugene. Whisenhunt also struck out eight while walking three. The 22-year-old is amidst a fantastic season, with a 0.52 ERA, 38.7% strikeout rate, and a .055 opponent batting average. His star pitch is a low-80 plus changeup that tunnels well with his low-90s fastball. The 2022 second-round pick's strong start should be encouraging to those in deeper dynasty leagues, but with a 53% fly-ball rate and weak tertiary pitches, there is room for improvement.

Carson Whisenhunt Yet To Pitch In AFL Due To Illness

San Francisco Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (illness) has yet to pitch in the Arizona Fall League because he's still ramping up after 10 days off when he was placed on the COVID-19 list. Whisenhunt is expected to be pitching in his first AFL game within a week. The 22-year-old southpaw is the team's No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and has thrown just 7 2/3 professional innings after being taken with the 66th overall pick in this year's draft. He made just two starts for Single-A San Jose in 2022, allowing no runs on five hits while walking one and striking out seven in just 4 2/3 innings pitched. In his 7 2/3 total frames, Whisenhunt didn't allow a single run while striking out 14 and walking just one.
