David Hernandez News

Indians Sign Steve Baron, Jake Elmore, David Hernandez

The Cleveland Indians have signed catcher Steve Baron, infielder Jake Elmore and relief pitcherDavid Hernandez to minor league deals on Friday. Baron will report to the clubs Lake County camp, while Elmore and Hernandez will report to Progressive Field in Cleveland. Hernandez should be used regularly early on as starters begin to build up their pitch counts. He had a rough year in Cincinnati in 2019, though, and all three players can be ignored in all fantasy formats ahead of the shortened 2020 season.

David Hernandez Earns Save In Season Opener

Cincinnati Reds reliever David Hernandez picked up the save in his team's 5-3 season-opening win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Hernandez pitched a third of an inning, issuing one walk in the process. He was able to end the game on a groundout off the bat of Corey Dickerson. While Hernandez earned the first save of the season, it came mostly because Cincy used Raisel Iglesias earlier in the game. Look for Iglesias, not Hernandez, to see the majority of the save chances for the team going forward, although there is a possibility that new manager David Bell deploys a committee in the ninth inning this season.

David Hernandez Activated From DL

The Cincinnati Reds activated right-handed reliever David Hernandez (shoulder) from the 10-day disabled list on Friday. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Reds optioned Phil Gosselin to Triple-A Louisville. Hernandez opened the season on the DL with a shoulder issue and made three rehab appearances in Triple-A. The Reds could use Hernandez to shore up a bullpen that has not been very effective in 2018. Hernandez has posted two straight seasons with a sub-4.00 ERA and should be able to help out in the Reds 'pen as a setup man.

David Hernandez Close To Rehab Assignment

Cincinnati Reds right-hander David Hernandez (shoulder) is getting close to going on a rehab assignment. Hernandez has been sidelined since spring training with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. He threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and will meet up with Triple-A Louisville on Friday if there are no issues with his shoulder. The veteran reliever has been a solid bullpen option over the past few seasons and would surely solidify a Cincinnati bullpen that has the fourth-highest ERA in the league this season. Hernandez has posted two straight seasons with a sub-4.00 ERA and has 132 strikeouts in 127 2/3 innings of work over that span.

David Hernandez Signs With Reds

Free-agent relief pitcher David Hernandez signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported the contract details. Hernandez pitched with the Diamondbacks and Angels last season while posting a quality 3.11 ERA and 52/9 K/BB ratio over 55 innings. The 32-year-old will function as a bridge to closer Raisel Iglesias.

Reds Targeting David Hernandez

The Cincinnati Reds are targeting free-agent relief pitcher David Hernandez as they look to fortify their bullpen behind closer Raisel Iglesias, according to sources. The Reds and Hernandez aren't close to a deal, but they are involved in serious discussions. Cincinnati is looking at other free-agent relievers, too. After having Tommy John surgery and missing all of 2014, Hernandez has bounced back the last two years and posted a 3.11 ERA with the Angels and Diamondbacks. Hernandez wouldn't be the closer in Cincinnati, but he'd definitely strengthen their bullpen. The addition of a cut fastball last year may have been the reason why Hernandez was even more effective, and it's known that he's looking for a multi-year deal.

David Hernandez Traded To Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired relief pitcher David Hernandez from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in exchange for minor league pitcher Luis Madero. Hernandez pitched respectfully with the Halos this year, sporting a 2.23 ERA with 9.2 K/9 in 36 1/3 innings, and he figures to serve in a setup role in Arizona. His fantasy value remains minimal unless current Snakes closer Fernando Rodney is injured or removed from the role. Madero is just 20 years old and has yet to pitch in a full season.

Bud Norris, David Hernandez Available

The Los Angeles Angels have made closer Bud Norris and relief pitcher David Hernandez available at the trade deadline Monday and are expected to move them. Norris has been a nice surprise for the Halos this year (3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 16 saves), although he's hit a bit of a rough patch recently. Hernandez has quietly been consistent, too, sporting a 2.23 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 37 K's in 36 1/3 innings in 2017. Norris would almost assuredly be used in a setup role wherever he's dealt, which would kill most of his fantasy value.
