Jason Foley Heads to 60-Day Injured List

Per the team, the Detroit Tigers have recalled reliever Jason Foley (shoulder) and placed him on the 60-day injured list. The 29-year-old recently underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. It's a procedural move for Detroit, as Foley had been an occupant on the Triple-A injured list since straining his shoulder in mid-April. The shuffling cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for Sawyer Gipson-Long, who returned from injury on Wednesday and tossed 3 2/3 innings of three-run ball. Expect Foley back sometime around the mid-way point of 2026 as he looks to return to form.

Jason Foley To Have Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Jason Foley (shoulder) will have season-ending right-shoulder surgery, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Foley recorded a career-best 28 saves for Detroit while also posting a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB in 60 relief innings in 2024 in his fourth year in the big leagues. However, he was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to begin the year and then landed on the injured list in mid-April with a right-shoulder strain. Before being shut down, he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings with the Mud Hens with nine strikeouts and no walks in five relief appearances. Fantasy managers holding him in deeper leagues in hopes that he'd return to Detroit at some point this year in a high-leverage role can now cut bait in redraft leagues. The Tigers will move forward with Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle as their co-closers.

Jason Foley Optioned To Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers optioned right-handed reliever Jason Foley to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold reports. Entering spring training, Foley was in the mix to save games for the Tigers to open the 2025 season, but that will have to be put on hold after he really struggled in spring training. The 29-year-old posted a 6.14 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while allowing five earned runs on 10 hits (one homer) with no walks and 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. Foley led the Tigers with 28 saves a year ago, so he'll no doubt be back with the big club eventually after he irons out some issues in the minors. But with Foley starting on the farm, the Tigers will now look to some combination of Beau Brieske, Tyler Holton, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest to close out games in the back of the bullpen. It's a messy situation for fantasy managers to navigate.

Jason Foley May Not Be The Defined Closer

According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, the Detroit Tigers may opt to use a combination of relief pitchers to navigate the late innings "regardless of who gets the save." Last week, the Tigers signed relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle to a one-year contract. Last season, Kahnle posted a solid 2.11 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP across 42 2/3 innings with the New York Yankees. He operated primarily as a setup man as he tallied 16 holds and one save. Throughout his career, he has only tallied eight saves. Last season, Jason Foley led the team in saves with 28 but did begin to lose some opportunities to Tyler Holton late in the season. Foley posted a 3.15 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP across 60 innings. Holton tallied six saves after the All-Star break and held a stellar 0.83 ERA and a 0.65 WHIP over these 43 1/3 innings. While Foley will open camp as the likely favorite to earn save opportunities, he may be given a short leash given the depth in Detroit rotation.

Jason Foley Avoids Arbitration With Tigers

The Detroit Tigers avoided salary arbitration with right-hander Jason Foley on Thursday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.15 million deal. In addition to Foley, Detroit also signed one-year deals for 2025 with infielder/outfielder Matt Vierling ($3.005 million), catcher Jake Rogers ($2.64 million), right-handers Casey Mize ($2.34 million), Will Vest ($1.4 million) and Beau Brieske ($1.025 million), and infielders Zach McKinstry ($1.65 million) and Andy Ibanez ($1.4 million). Foley broke out in 2024 with a career-high 28 saves for the Tigers while also sporting a 3.15 ERA (3.82 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP and a 46:20 K:BB in 60 innings pitched. Although the Tigers are a team on the rise after making the postseason last year, Foley lost the closing job midseason and also during the playoffs, so fantasy managers shouldn't bet on a repeat.

Jason Foley Knocks Down 27th Save

Detroit Tigers closer Jason Foley tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. Foley didn't allow a baserunner and struck out a pair in his inning of work. The 28-year-old hasn't been dominant in the closer role, but he's been the best Detroit has and has gotten the job done most of the time, converting on 27 of his 31 save chances. With the Tigers playing better of late, Foley has actually become one of the best sources of saves in September, notching eight of them in the month. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers are happy with Foley as their closer come next year because if they are he should be a relatively sought-after fantasy asset.

Jason Foley Picks Up 21st Save Of Season

Detroit Tigers closer Jason Foley picked up his 21st save of the season on Saturday as the Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics 2-1. Foley replaced Sean Guenther with one out in the ninth, gave up a single and recorded one strikeout on his way to securing the save. Foley now has a 2.92 ERA and ranks 10th in the AL in saves. With 21 saves in 24 opportunities, Foley has shown he can slam the door shut when given the opportunity. His fantasy value is still held back by the limited amount of opportunities he has with the Tigers, but he remains a solid option when given the chance. Fantasy managers looking for help in the closer role may want to look at Foley for the coming week as he may have more opportunities than normal coming up with the Colorado Rockies set to visit Detroit this week.

Jason Foley Secures Save No. 16

Detroit Tigers closer Jason Foley secured a save in Thursday's win over the visiting Seattle Mariners at Comerica Park, striking out one batter in a clean ninth inning. Somewhat shockingly, it was his first converted save since way back on July 10. Foley induced a groundout from M's utility man Dylan Moore for the final out, safeguarding the Tigers' 2-1 win over Seattle on Thursday. The hard-throwing 28-year-old right-hander remains the best bet for saves out of Detroit's bullpen, but he does also have eight holds this year, so he hasn't been restricted to closing duties. Overall, Foley has a 3.48 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 32 punchouts and 15 walks in 44 frames while going 16-for-19 on save chances for the Tigers this year.

Jason Foley Picks Up A Save On Friday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jason Foley got the final out of a 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays to earn the save on Friday. With runners on first and third, Foley needed just three pitches to induce a Danny Jansen groundout to secure the win for his team. The 28-year-old has been steady at the back of the Detroit bullpen this season, posting a 2-1 record, 2.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings of work while converting 11 of his 12 save opportunities. While he doesn't post big strikeout numbers, Foley has fantasy value as Detroit's primary closer moving forward.

Jason Foley Earns 10th Save Monday

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Jason Foley earned his 10th save of the season in Monday's 6-5 win over the Marlins. Foley came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by one and delivered a 1-2-3 outing with a strikeout. After starting the season as the team's closer, the Tigers have mixed up their bullpen usage over the past couple of weeks. However, Foley has been the team's best reliever, converting all but one save opportunity with a 2.20 ERA, an 8.27 K/9 rate, and a 3.86 BB/9 rate. He still seems like the pitcher to roster for fantasy purposes and may be able to earn the closer's role back if he can string together several solid performances.
