The Texas Rangers recalled relief pitcher Kyle Bird from Triple-A Nashville on Monday, and they designated veteran reliever Jeanmar Gomez for assignment. Gomez managed a 1-0 record with a dismal 8.22 ERA and 1.89 WHIP with six walks and 10 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings across 16 appearances. Bird takes his place in the bullpen, and will give manager Chris Woodward a second left-handed option. He managed a 2.70 ERA with a save across 13 1/3 innings over 11 relief appearances for Nashville this season, and he appeared in five games for the Rangers in 2018.
Free-agent relief pitcher Jeanmar Gomez signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox, according to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation. A year removed from a 37-save season with the Phillies in 2016, Gomez struggled to a 7.25 ERA in 22 1/3 innings of 2017. He will fight for a bullpen spot in a revamped White Sox bullpen that has added relievers Joakim Soria, Luis Avilan, Rob Scahill and Xavier Cedeno this offseason. Gomez played for the Phillies, Brewers and Mariners in 2017.
Jeanmar Gomez's complete collapse following his 2016 season with the Philadelphia Phillies is now complete. The 29-year-old was designated for assignment today, effectively ending his tenure with the Phillies. Just last year, he was the club's closer, having recorded eight saves and a 1.80 ERA in April. Towards the end of the season, however, he teetered and eventually collapsed, pitching to a 19.13 ERA in September. Entering this season, he was once again give the role of team closer, but was quickly pulled as his struggles continued. Gomez will have a difficult time finding employment with another major league club and will likely have to settle for a minor league gig.
