Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington announced on Tuesday that starting pitcher Johnny Cueto will start Wednesday's game against the hosting Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. It's set to be Cueto's first major-league appearance of 2024 on Wednesday, as he's currently part of the Angels' taxi squad. The 38-year-old veteran right-hander will hold little to no fantasy appeal in a difficult spot on the road against a solid Royals lineup, having posted a 4.76 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 49 strikeouts and 13 walks over 64 1/3 innings (13 starts) in the minor leagues this year.
Johnny Cueto Signs Minor League Deal With Los Angeles Angels
Free agent pitcher Johnny Cueto signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. Cueto had been signed to the Texas Rangers and was hoping to be able to snag a spot in their rotation but that chance ultimately didn't arise. The 38-year-old exercised the opt-out in his minor league deal with the Rangers earlier in July and now has found a home with the Angels. Cueto posted a 5.92 ERA in 38 innings with Triple-A Round Rock. He will likely need to improve those numbers in the Angels' minor league system before jumping into their rotation. Fantasy managers don't need to rush to add Cueto to their rosters as his current minor league ERA and his 2023 ERA of 6.02 with the Miami Marlins don't point towards future success in the final years of his career.
The Texas Rangers have signed starting pitcher Johnny Cueto to a minor-league contract on Tuesday. The 38-year-old lands a deal with the defending World Series champions after a rough year with the Miami Marlins. Cueto posted a 6.02 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 39/15 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings with the Marlins last season. It's uncertain what Cueto still has left in the tank, but he'll at least be additional depth for the organization. Cueto has plenty of experience but is unlikely to offer any kind of fantasy value.
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto wasn't very effective in a no-decision on Friday night in an eventual 9-6 win over the visiting Atlanta Braves. Cueto allowed three earned runs on seven hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out two in only four innings of work. The veteran 37-year-old Dominican hurler has only appeared in 10 games (nine starts) for the Fish in 2023 and hasn't been very good. And since he returned from the injured list on Sept. 2, he's given up 11 earned runs on 17 hits (four homers) while walking five and striking out only nine in 12 2/3 innings over three starts. Cueto has a 6.20 season ERA and 1.29 WHIP and has very little fantasy upside at this point in his career.
Johnny Cueto To Start On Saturday Against Washington
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (illness) is expected to start on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. Cueto was placed on the 15-day injured list back on August 21 with a viral infection, and although he hasn't been officially activated yet, beat writer Jordan McPherson stated that the veteran hurler is starting on Saturday. It's been a poor season so far for the 37-year-old as he owns a lackluster 5.57 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 26:9 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings (seven games, six appearances). His low WHIP and inflated ERA suggest he's had some bad luck so far but fantasy managers should avoid streaming him for this one. Miami is in the thick of the heated NL Wild Card race so any positive signs from Cueto would be big down the stretch.
Miami Marlins pitcher Johnny Cueto is getting the ball Tuesday night for a home matchup versus the Houston Astros. The veteran hurler has made six appearances for the Marlins in 2023, five of which have been starts. Cueto enters Tuesday's contest sporting an elevated 5.33 ERA, although his 4.53 SIERA and solid 15.2% K-BB% suggest he's been somewhat better than his surface ERA would suggest. The long ball has been his biggest nemesis to this point as the right-hander has surrendered seven home runs in just 27 innings on the season, good for a 2.33 HR/9 clip. He will take on an Astros offense that has taken a step back this season, sitting in a share of 16th with a .314 wOBA versus right-handed pitching.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto will make his return to the starting rotation for Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. The 37-year-old only made one start before going down in April due to a biceps issue. He recently returned from the injured list, but the Marlins put him in the bullpen. He fired three scoreless innings versus the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday. It appears the Marlins have seen enough to give him the green light to return to the starting rotation. Cueto won't be a recommended streaming option for Saturday's slate.
The Miami Marlins reinstated right-hander Johnny Cueto (biceps) from the 60-day injured list on Monday. In corresponding moves, the Marlins optioned right-hander Sean Reynolds to Triple-A Jacksonville and moved outfielder Jonathan Davis (knee) to the 60-day injured list. The 37-year-old veteran hurler is off the fantasy radar for now, as the Fish plan to use him out of the bullpen to start the second half of the season. He surrendered four earned runs in just an inning pitched in his lone start of the year on April 3 against the Minnesota Twins, and he posted a rough 10.24 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in seven minor-league rehab starts with Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola. Cueto hasn't been nearly good enough to earn a rotation spot in Miami in 2023.
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto (biceps) will return from the 60-day injured list after the All-Star break next week, with his time up on his minor-league rehab assignment. His role has yet to be determined, but he could take the rotation spot of rookie Eury Perez, who is being sent to the minors on Friday. Fantasy managers shouldn't really have much interest in the aging Cueto, who didn't look good on his rehab assignment after allowing four runs on three hits in one inning in his only start in the big leagues this year. The 37-year-old is scheduled to make his final rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday.
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto (ankle, biceps) will make his third minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday, and he's scheduled to throw five innings or 75 pitches. Cueto allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in a rehab outing for Double-A Pensacola on June 16, retiring 10 of the final 13 batters he faced after giving up a first-inning grand slam. He had been dealing with a biceps issue on and off since spring training before he left his Marlins debut on April 3. Then he sprained his left ankle during a rehab start for Jacksonville on May 6. The Marlins could use the 37-year-old veteran after placing Edward Cabrera (shoulder) on the IL recently, but at this point in his career, Cueto probably doesn't have a lot to offer fantasy managers.
