Jose De Leon Out For The Season

Minnesota Twins reliever Jose De Leon (elbow) underwent an MRI on Monday after suffering an elbow injury during his last appearance on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. According to MLB.com, the MRI revealed a torn UCL and the right-hander will require Tommy John surgery. De Leon with miss the remainder of the season and most, if not all, of 2024. The 30-year-old's injury won't affect many fantasy formats, as he had pitched to a 4.67 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 24.3% strikeout rate across 17.1 innings with no saves or holds.

Jose De Leon Dealing With Elbow Soreness

Minnesota Twins right-hander Jose De Leon (elbow) picked up an elbow injury while warming up during Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers. He immediately left the mound and was pulled from warm ups due to elbow soreness. The severity of De Leon's injury is unknown, and he is considered day-to-day. De Leon owned a 4.67 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings in 2023. The Twins will provide further injury details on De Leon after the game.

Jose De Leon Joins The Twins

Free-agent right-hander Jose De Leon announced on his Twitter account on Tuesday that he signed a minor-league deal with the Minnesota Twins. The deal includes an invitation to spring training next year. De Leon only appeared in 11 minor-league games for the Toronto Blue Jays this past season due to injury, posting a combined 4.05 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and eight walks in 13 1/3 innings over 11 appearances (six starts) with three different levels. The 30-year-old was once a top prospect for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but injuries and control issues have slowed him down. In five major-league seasons with the Dodgers, Rays and Reds, De Leon has gone 4-1 with an 8.44 ERA (5.98 FIP), a 1.85 WHIP, a 27.7 percent strikeout rate and a 14.5 percent walk rate in 48 innings over 22 outings (six starts).

Jose De Leon Heading To Bullpen

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose De Leon will be shifted to the bullpen this week to accommodate the return of Sonny Gray (back) from the injured list. Gray will be activated to start against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. Gray was placed on the injured list at the beginning of the season after developing back spasms during Cactus League play in the spring. De Leon made two starts for the Reds, posting a 7.71 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts across 9 1/3 innings of work. The move to the bullpen zaps what little fantasy appeal De Leon had.

Jose De Leon Allows Six Runs, Strikes Out Nine

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose De Leon struggled in a 7-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. De Leon allowed six runs over 4 1/3 innings of work, although he did manage to strike out nine batters. The veteran right-hander has been racking up the strikeouts this season, posting 18 in 9 1/3 innings of work, but he has not been great in the run prevention department, posting a 7.71 ERA. From a fantasy perspective, the high strikeout totals aren't worth the other rough stats from De Leon across the board. With right-hander Sonny Gray expected to return to the field later this week, it will be either Jeff Hoffman or De Leon who is shifted to the bullpen. If De Leon makes another start, it lines up to come against the Cleveland Indians.

Jose De Leon Strikes Out Nine Vs. Pittsburgh

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose De Leon pitched well in his first start of the season, allowing two runs over five innings of work. De Leon struck out nine and walked two in a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. The veteran right-hander allowed both of his runs on two solo homers in the first inning but was able to calm down after that. De Leon won a spot in the rotation after Sonny Gray and Michael Lorenzen both started the season on the injured list but he is likely to be shifted to the bullpen once Gray and Lorenzen are able to return to action.

Jeff Hoffman, Jose De Leon Make Cincinnati Rotation

The Cincinnati Reds finalized their starting rotation on Saturday, awarding the final two spots to right-handers Jeff Hoffman and Jose De Leon. Those two will follow Luis Castillo, Tyler Mahle, and Wade Miley in the rotation when the regular season begins next week. Hoffman and De Leon needed some injuries in front of them to grab rotation spots as Sonny Gray and Michael Lorenzen will both open the regular season on the injured list. De Leon chalked up 24 strikeouts across 16 2/3 innings this spring, although those came along with an ERA over 8.00. He may be worth streaming in plus matchups in fantasy. Hoffman is a former first-round draft pick who will be escaping the thin air of Coors Field as he looks to jump-start his career after only pitching for the Colorado Rockies in the big leagues.

Jose De Leon Fans Seven In Start

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose De Leon continued to rack up the strikeouts, although it wasn't all good news in his Cactus League start against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. De Leon allowed seven runs over four innings of work while striking out seven. The veteran hurler cruised through the first three innings before giving up four runs in the fourth and another two runs in the fifth. He was relieved in the fifth inning before recording an out. De Leon has picked up 24 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings of work this spring but he also has an 8.64 ERA. He is on the roster bubble and could open the year in the minors.

Jose De Leon Strikes Out Eight In Spring Appearance

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose De Leon turned in a solid performance in a 9-3 Cactus League loss to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. De Leon came on in relief and struck out eight batters in three innings of work while allowing two runs. He walked three and allowed two homers in the outing. De Leon has shown the ability to rack up strikeouts this spring, punching out 14 batters in eight innings of work. The former Los Angeles Dodger prospect is trying to win the fifth spot in the starting rotation this spring and has presented a good case. If De Leon doesn't land in the starting rotation, look for him to head to the bullpen for Cincy.

Jose De Leon Strikes Out Four

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose De Leon allowed two runs over three innings in a 5-3 Cactus League loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. De Leon struck out four and walked one in the outing, his second of the spring. The former top prospect for the Los Angeles Dodgers impressively forced seven swinging strikes in the second inning of the outing alone. De Leon is fighting for the fifth spot in the Cincinnati pitching rotation and saw one of his main competitors, Michael Lorenzen, allow three runs in 1 2/3 innings in the same game. The Cincinnati coaching staff is reportedly high on De Leon's potential but he will need to continue to produce to nail down a spot in the rotation.
