Justin Wilson Inks Major-League Deal With Reds

Free-agent reliever Justin Wilson has signed a major-league deal with the Cincinnati Reds after he opted out of his minor-league pact with the Dodgers on Wednesday. The left-hander last saw big-league action with the Reds in the 2022 season, posting a 2.45 ERA in five appearances but was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery that cost him the 2023 campaign, as well. He did appear briefly in the minors with the Brewers last season but the club declined their option on Wilson this winter. The long-time big leaguer has largely been effective in his career, posting a 3.41 ERA and a 25.9% K% across 527 appearances. He certainly won't be in line for saves and likely won't see many hold opportunities, leaving him off the fantasy radar at this point.

Brewers Decline Their Options On Andrew Chafin, Justin Wilson

The Milwaukee Brewers declined to pick up their 2024 options on left-handed relievers Andrew Chafin ($7.25 million) and Justin Wilson ($2.5 million) on Thursday, making them free agents this offseason. The club also claimed infielder Vinny Capra off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Chafin will get a $725,000 buyout, while Wilson's buyout is worth $150,000. Chafin, 33, wasn't as effective in 2023 with the Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks, sporting a 4.73 ERA (4.02 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, a career-high eight saves and 63 strikeouts in 51 1/3 relief innings. He had a 5.82 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 17 innings for Milwaukee. Wilson, 36, didn't pitch at all in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and also suffering a lat strain in the second half.

Justin Wilson's Season Is Over

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell confirmed that left-handed reliever Justin Wilson (lat) is done for the rest of the season with a left-lat injury. The Brewers placed Wilson on the 15-day injured list last weekend, and he won't be ready to return for the rest of the year. The 35-year-old veteran southpaw had just returned from the 60-day injured list last Friday after coming back from Tommy John surgery, so it's a tough break for him. Wilson was injured getting ready to enter the game out of the bullpen just before making his 2023 debut. The good news is his lat injury isn't nearly as serious as Tommy John surgery, so he should be ready for spring training next year.

Justin Wilson Reinstated From Injured List

The Milwaukee Brewers reinstated left-handed reliever Justin Wilson (elbow) from the 60-day injured list on Friday and moved left-hander Bennett Sousa (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. Wilson is joining the Brewers and will be making his 2023 season debut when he gets into a game after having Tommy John surgery in June of last year. The 35-year-old veteran gave up one run in 6 1/3 minor-league rehab innings while striking out six and walking one. Wilson is unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations for the Brew Crew bullpen, so he should remain well off the fantasy radar for the rest of the season.

Justin Wilson Returning This Week

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Justin Wilson (elbow) joined the club for their road trip on Monday and will come off the injured this either Wednesday or Friday, according to MLB.com. The 35-year-old has yet to pitch in a Brewers uniform, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in June of last season. Wilson owns a career 3.41 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 25.9% strikeout rate with 18 saves over 11 seasons. The Brewers are set at closer with Devin Williams, but if the southpaw pitches well, he could eventually see himself in a high-leverage role.

Justin Wilson Goes On 15-Day Injured List

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Justin Wilson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday. No surprise here, as the lefty is still not 100% after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2022. Wilson, who signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract in February, appeared in five games with the Reds last season, posting an 0-1 record with a 2.45 ERA and seven strikeouts in just over three innings. The 35-year-old wasn't expected to draw much interest from fantasy managers to begin with. However, since Wilson isn't due back until around the All-Star break, his fantasy value can't get any lower.

Justin Wilson "Progressing Nicely"

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Justin Wilson (elbow) is making healthy strides in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He recently began a flat-ground throwing program and aims to return after the All-Star break. Wilson signed with the Brewers over the offseason on a one-year, $10 million deal. It was a puzzling move, considering that Wilson will only be available for the second half. The 35-year-old was diagnosed with elbow soreness last April but was then transferred to the 60-day IL since the injury appeared to be more of a concern. He pitched just five games for the Cincinnati Reds and posted a 2.45 ERA along with seven strikeouts. The Brewers are hoping that Wilson continues to progress well in hopes of reinstating him by midseason.

Justin Wilson Signs With Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed left-hander Justin Wilson to a one-year deal. The 35-year-old is expected to miss a significant chunk of the 2023 season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. However, this deal includes a 2024 club option, so this could end up being a good deal for the Brewers. The southpaw only made five appearances last season, but has been a reliable option throughout his career. This a good move by the Brewers to add depth to their bullpen.

Justin Wilson Has Tommy John Surgery

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Justin Wilson (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday. Wilson is currently on the 60-day injured list and will miss the rest of this season and the beginning of next year. The 34-year-old left-hander had been sidelined since late April with an elbow injury, and he'll now begin the long rehab process. Wilson looked good in 3 2/3 innings for the Reds this year, allowing just one run while walking none and striking out seven in five appearances out of the bullpen.

Cincinnati Reds Acquire Justin Wilson And Luis Cessa

The Cincinnati Reds acquired relief pitchers Justin Wilson and Luis Cessa from the New York Yankees on Tuesday night for a player to be named later. Wilson struggled in 18 innings for the Yankees in 2021, posting a 7.50 ERA and a 4.72 FIP to go along with 15 strikeouts and nine walks. Cessa, meanwhile, has pitched to a 2.82 ERA, a 3.54 FIP, 31 strikeouts, and 17 walks in 38.1 innings this season. Cincinnati's bullpen might be one to stay away from in fantasy until Lucas Sims and Tejay Antone return from the injured list. Heath Hembree and Amir Garrett have both been getting save opportunities, but the Reds now have Wilson and Cessa on hand as late-inning options.
