Angels Acquire Andrew Chafin, Luis Garcia From Nationals

The Los Angeles Angels acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin and right-handed reliever Luis Garcia from the Washington Nationals on Wednesday in exchange for minor-league first baseman Sam Brown and left-hander Jake Eder, a source tells The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. The Angels are officially buyers at this year's trade deadline despite being four games out of the final American League wild-card spot with four teams in front of them, although this is a minor trade. The 35-year-old Chafin will give the Halos another lefty for their bullpen after posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.60 ERA and 18:12 K:BB in 20 innings with the Nats this year. Garcia has already pitched for Washington and the Dodgers this year and will return to Anaheim after being traded from the Angels to Red Sox a year ago. The 38-year-old has struggled with a 4.10 ERA in 37 1/3 total innings in 2025.

Reliever Luis Garcia to Sign Major League Deal with Nationals

Right-handed reliever Luis Garcia has agreed to a Major League contract with the Washington Nationals, pending a physical, according to Andrew Golden of the Washington Post. Garcia, not to be confused with Nationals second baseman Luis Garcia Jr., became available when the Los Angeles Dodgers released him earlier this week. The 38-year-old recorded a rough 5.27 ERA with 24 strikeouts, 16 walks, and a 1.83 WHIP in 27 1/3 innings with the Dodgers, leading the club to go in another direction. The nomadic Garcia has pitched in the majors for seven different teams since debuting with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013. He carries a career 4.20 ERA with 8.48 K/9, 4.00 BB/9, and a 1.44 WHIP across 555 1/3 frames.

Luis Garcia Activated From Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated reliever Luis Garcia (adductor) from the injured list on Thursday. Right-hander Will Klein was optioned as the corresponding move. Garcia has missed almost exactly one month since being placed on the IL with a right adductor strain. He's pitched to a 4.50 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP in 26 innings pitched so far this year. His peripherals aren't impressive either, as he's posted a modest 19.8% strikeout rate and a 4.85 xERA. Garcia is not a threat to compete for saves and does not need to be rostered in most leagues.

Luis Garcia Beginning Rehab Assignment on Sunday

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Luis Garcia (groin) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho on Sunday. He appears to have progressed enough to throw some rehab outings, so he should return soon. Garcia has been sidelined since early June due to a right groin strain. If everything goes well, Garcia should be able to return to the big league club by July. Before going down, Garcia posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, and 23/15 K/BB in 26 innings of work. He isn't someone that needs to be rostered in fantasy formats right now.

Dodgers Sign Luis Garcia To Minor-League Deal

According to Aram Leighton of Just BB Media, the Los Angeles Dodgers have signed right-handed pitcher Luis Garcia to a minor-league contract that includes an invite to spring training. The 38-year-old opened the 2024 campaign with the Los Angeles Angels before finishing the season with the Boston Red Sox. With the Angels, he was quite effective, holding a 3.71 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP across 43 2/3 innings. However, in Boston, Garcia posted an 8.22 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP in 15 1/3 innings of work. Under the hood, Garcia generated a solid 3.56 xERA and an above-average 50.3 percent ground-ball rate, which were both above the average marks. However, he tallied strikeouts at a low 20.9 percent rate. If he makes the major league roster, Garcia will likely have a low-leverage role in the Dodgers bullpen.

Luis Garcia's Injury Isn't Season-Ending

Boston Red Sox right-handed reliever Luis Garcia (shoulder), who has a 10.32 ERA in 11 appearances since joining the Red Sox, was placed on the 15-day injured list before the team's game on Tuesday with right-shoulder inflammation. Manager Alex Cora said the injury isn't season-ending, though, but there was no immediate word on the severity of the injury. "Just get treatment and see where we're at in the upcoming days and just go from there," Cora said. The 37-year-old veteran could probably use the time off after joining Boston in a trade from the Los Angeles Angels at the end of July. The Dominican hurler has gone 5-1 overall this year with a 5.07 ERA (4.19 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, a career-high four saves, 51 strikeouts and 15 walks in 55 innings. Garcia had more fantasy intrigue in deeper leagues when he was in Anaheim.

Luis Garcia Traded To Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox acquired right-handed reliever Luis Garcia from the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. It's unknown what the Red Sox sent to the Angels in return. Now that the Angels have traded both Carlos Estevez and Garcia, they're likely to use some combination of Ben Joyce and/or Jose Quijada to close out games the rest of the season. Garcia, 37, comes to Boston after going 5-1 with a 3.71 ERA (3.68 FIP), a 1.17 WHIP, a career-high four saves and a 40:14 K:BB in 43 2/3 innings out of the bullpen in Anaheim. With the move to Beantown, Garcia will go back to being only mildly attractive in deep holds leagues, as he's set to be a late-inning setup man in front of Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen. For a high-leverage reliever, Garcia's 22% strikeout rate this year leaves a lot to be desired.

Luis Garcia Earns Third Save

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Luis Garcia was tasked with holding a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Wednesday's game against the Houston Astros. The right-hander blew the lead during the seventh inning of Tuesday's game. Despite that, Garcia was given another chance and worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. Garcia has been busy pitching in four of the last five games. The Angels bullpen situation is a little messy with Carlos Estevez as the primary closer, but Adam Cimber and Garcia are in the mix as well.

Angels Sign Luis Garcia To One-Year Deal

The Los Angeles Angels signed free-agent reliever Luis Garcia to a one-year, $4.25 million deal to help bolster their bullpen on Tuesday. Garcia spent the last two years pitching for the San Diego Padres. The 36-year-old veteran right-hander wasn't all that great in 2023 for the Friars, but he's an upgrade over what the Halos were working with last year. In his two seasons in San Diego, Garcia went 6-9 with a 3.73 ERA (3.44 FIP) and 1.30 WHIP with three saves, 41 walks and 121 strikeouts in 120 2/3 relief innings. Garcia was hurt by walks and poor control more than anything, and his strikeout rate also dropped from a career-high 26.3% in 2022 to 19.9% in 2023. He could be of some use in deep holds leagues as a setup man in Anaheim, but not much else.

Luis Garcia Picks Up Save For Padres

San Diego Padres reliever Luis Garcia recorded his third save of the season on Saturday, closing out his team's 2-1 win over the Nationals. With Josh Hader struggling in the closing role as of late, manager Bob Melvin stated the team would go with a committee approach moving forward, and Garcia was the arm summoned for tonight's opportunity. He retired the first man he faced, but went on to allow a single and a hit batsmen before getting an inning-ending double play to seal the win. Garcia has posted a serviceable 3.40 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 48 K through 45 IP, and would only serve as a fantasy option for managers who are desperate for saves down the stretch run.
