Nolan Fontana News

Angels Release Infielder Nolan Fontana

The Los Angeles Angels have released infielder Nolan Fontana, clearing a roster spot for catcher Joe Hudson. Fontana is a career .065 hitter in two partial seasons. His two career hits were both home runs. Fontana will likely catch on as AAA depth with someone else, but he is far away from fantasy relevance.

Kaleb Cowart to DL, Jose Fernandez and Nolan Fontana Recalled

Los Angeles Angels infielder Kaleb Cowart has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain. Thirty-year-old infielder Jose Fernandez has been recalled in his place and will start at first base on Friday. Infielder Nolan Fontana has been recalled as well, replacing Shohei Ohtani. Fernandez has a chance to play a fair amount but shouldn't be counted on in fantasy formats just yet.

Angels Recall Second Baseman Nolan Fontana

Infielder Nolan Fontana has been recalled by the Los Angeles Angels, replacing C.J. Cron, who was optioned to Triple-A. Fontana, 26, will be making his first appearance in the Show after six seasons in the minor leagues. The former second-round pick does not have a clearly defined role for the Angels, but he has extensive experience playing both second base and shortstop in the minors. This is particularly interesting considering the well publicized struggles of current second baseman Danny Espinosa, who is hitting .152 with 50 strikeouts. It remains to be seen if Fontana will step into an everyday role in LA, but if so, he would only carry very deep league value. He is a career .239 hitter in the minor leagues, although he does have a nice .265/.374/.426 line in 136 Triple-A at-bats this year. Regardless, he has not had double-digit home runs or steals in the minors since he posted 16 steals back in 2013 with High-A Lancaster. He should be left alone except in very deep formats, and only if he grabs a starting role.
