The Atlanta Braves agreed to a minor league deal with free-agent infielder Phil Gosselin on Saturday, according to a source. Gosselin spent the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he hit .261/.314/.362 with seven home runs, 47 RBI and 40 runs scored in 373 plate appearances over 104 games. The 33-year-old will likely be given an invite to spring camp, and he'll be hoping to make the team's Opening Day roster as infield depth for Atlanta. Gosselin has played with seven different teams in nine big-league seasons, and he'll be returning to the Braves after beginning his career with them in 2013. He has a career .261/.314/.362 slash line with 17 homers and 101 RBI.
Utilityman Phil Gosselin is set for free agency, as the Los Angeles Angels have opted not to tender him a contract. They did tender their three other eligible players, catcher Max Stassi, pitcher Mike Mayers, and utilityman Tyler Wade. It is the acquisitions of Wade and Andrew Velazquez, both from the Yankees, which likely made Gosselin expendable. The 33-year-old recorded a .676 OPS in 345 at-bats in 2021, appearing at first base, third base, and in the corner outfield. He should catch on with another team after the expected lockout but will remain off the fantasy radar.
Los Angeles Angels infielder/outfielder Phil Gosselin went 2-for-4 in Tuesdays 10-5 loss to the Houston Astros. He doubled and smacked a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Gosselin now has three extra-base hits in his last three games and has hit .240 with a .905 OPS over his last seven. Across 94 games this season, he's slashing .267/.324/.380 with seven home runs and three stolen bases. Fantasy managers should keep Gosselin on the waiver wire in almost every league, with the exception of an odd stream in a good matchup.
Los Angeles Angels infielder/outfielder Phil Gosselin was a key part in the 13-10 victory over the Detroit Tigers Thursday, collecting three hits. He had a solo home run, two singles, two RBI, and two runs in six trips to the plate. The big day brought his slash line to .282/.336/.398, and he now has five home runs with 32 RBI and 24 runs. He's been especially productive against lefties this year, with a .820 OPS when facing southpaws. Since August 3, Gosselin's been on a bit of a hot streak, hitting .316 with a .456 slugging. He's a deep-league waiver-wire option for fantasy managers banking on Gosselin keeping up this pace for the rest of the season. However, with his career OPS at .689, he's more of a streaming option when a left-hander's on the hill.
Los Angeles Angels first baseman Phil Gosselin will start and hit third Tuesday night against the Rockies. Gosselin is by no means a household name and is slashing .229/.296/.292 this season but finds himself in the three-hole thanks to his production against left-handed pitching. With the Rockies trotting out left-handed starter Austin Gomber on Tuesday, Gosselin gets the call in the middle of the order thanks to a .359 batting average against lefties this season. If Gosselin delivers, he could be a steal in DFS lineups for Tuesday's action.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Phil Gosselin will try and finish up his first half strong when the Angels open up a weekend series with the Mariners beginning Friday. Gosselin has at least one hit in each of his last five spot-starts with four runs batted in. Gosselin has been able to fill in for star teammate Anthony Rendon for stretches this season and is slashing .318/.370/.455 through 110 at-bats. Gosselin will not have any kind of fantasy value unless a starter is injured and the 32-year-old sees consistent playing time.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Phil Gosselin will start at third base in place of the injured Anthony Rendon on Wednesday. Gosselin has been used primarily as a player that manager Joe Maddon can use off the bench late in games but could see more playing time coming up due to Rendon's triceps injury. Through 68 spread-out at-bats this season, Gosselin is slashing .294/.333/.412 with five doubles and nine runs batted in. Gosselin is too risky to insert into fantasy lineups but is 4-for-11 (.364) in the month of June.
Phil Gosselin Called up to Replace a Pair of Pittsburgh Infielders
Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Phil Gosselin was brought up by the Pirates on Friday to fill the utility-infielder role after the club designated Alen Hanson for assignment and sent Gift Ngoepe down to Triple-A. Gosselin spent the last two years in Arizona, slashing .277/.324/.368 in 220 at-bats in 2016. That's a near match for his career numbers, but there isn't enough power or speed to make him a consideration in most fantasy leagues, even if he were to become a starter. Gosselin has a total of six home runs and seven steals in five Major League seasons. Ngoepe was hitting .222 with 26 strikeouts in 54 at-bats and is mainly a defensive player.
