Reese McGuire Suffers Left Thumb Contusion

Boston Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire (thumb) exited Tuesday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday with an apparent left thumb contusion, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The 28-year-old is hitting .271 at the dish but with just one homer, 14 runs, 16 RBI, and a single stolen base over 70 games. It's unclear how serious the issue is right now, though whatever happens, Connor Wong will continue to get the majority of reps behind the plate, and McGuire remains irrelevant in all formats.

Reese McGuire Will Be Activated This Week

Boston Red Sox backstop Reese McGuire (oblique) has completed his rehab assignment and is ready to rejoin the big league club either Tuesday or Wednesday, according to MLB.com. The 28-year-old has been out of action since landing on the injured list with a right oblique strain on June 22. Before going down, McGuire slashed .267/.313/.352 with no homers, 11 runs, and 11 RBI across 40 games. He should once again backup fellow catcher Connor Wong, displacing current backup Jorge Alfaro.

Reese McGuire Eyeing Rehab Assignment Next Week

The target date for Boston Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire (oblique) to begin a minor-league rehab assignment is around next Tuesday, July 25. McGuire has been slowly recovering from a right-oblique strain that he suffered on June 21 against the Minnesota Twins, but he was able to resume baseball activities on July 6. In any event, he's getting close to returning to backup duties behind Connor Wong in Boston. At the moment, Jorge Alfaro is serving as the Red Sox's backup backstop. McGuire will return to a .267/.313/.352 slash line with no home runs, nine doubles, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored in 116 trips to the plate over 40 games in his first full season in Beantown.

Reese McGuire Not Ready To Return

Boston Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire (oblique) resumed baseball activities on July 6 after initially being slow to recover from a right-oblique strain that he suffered taking a swing on June 21 against the Minnesota Twins. Oblique injuries usually take a minimum of two to three weeks to heal, but McGuire's is taking longer. His absence led the Red Sox to sign Jorge Alfaro to a major-league deal on July 6. Whenever the 28-year-old backstop is finally ready to return, he'll rejoin Boston's roster as a backup catcher. He has minimal fantasy appeal in that role and was hitting .267 (28-for-105) with no home runs, nine doubles, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored in 116 plate appearances over 40 games played.

Reese McGuire Lands On Injured List

The Boston Red Sox placed catcher Reese McGuire (oblique) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with a right-oblique strain that he suffered on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Twins. In corresponding moves, the team put outfielder Alex Verdugo on the bereavement list, added pitcher Brandon Walter and catcher Caleb Hamilton and moved Yu Chang (wrist) to the 60-day injured list. McGuire will most likely miss more than 10 days with his oblique injury. In the meantime, Hamilton will serve as the backup to Connor Wong. The 28-year-old McGuire has hit .267 (28-for-105) with no homers, nine doubles, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored in 40 games so far this year in Boston.

Reese McGuire Begins On Bench Friday

Boston Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire will be out of the starting lineup again on Friday against the Texas Rangers. McGuire will be out of the starting lineup for the third straight game on Friday despite going 20-for-54 (.370) with no homers, five RBI and five runs scored in 18 games since joining the team on Aug. 3. He's battling for playing time with both Kevin Plawecki and Connor Wong. Wong is doing the catching on Friday and will hit ninth against Rangers left-hander Dallas Keuchel. The 26-year-old will be playing in just his sixth game for the Red Sox and 12th game in his two major league seasons. Wong has two hits in his eight at-bats in 2022 and is still searching for his first big-league homer.

White Sox Trade Zack Collins For Reese McGuire

The Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a catcher swap. Zack Collins is headed to Toronto while Reese McGuire is on his way to Chicago. While it may seem like a perplexing trade on the surface, the reasoning behind it for both teams appears sound. In McGuire, the White Sox will have a more proven backup behind starter Yasmani Grandal. As for the Blue Jays, the club is loaded at catcher and the franchise wanted to reduce that depth. Collins has a minor league option left on his contract so he'll be headed to Triple-A while the team goes with just Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk as catching options to open the year.

Reese McGuire Has Four-Hit Afternoon

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire had his best day at the plate so far this season on Sunday, going 4-for-5 in the team's 7-4 win over the Orioles. Three of his four knocks went for doubles as he scored twice and drove in another pair to help pace the offense to a series victory. The terrific day boosts McGuire's slash line to .277/.329/.431 with one homer, nine runs, and five RBI through 26 games. His numbers aren't lighting the world on fire, but he's arguably been the most productive bat that the Jays have gotten out of the catcher spot this season. It's not enough to thrust McGuire into a fantasy-relevant asset, but it could mean he gets more playing time moving forward with Danny Jansen set to return to the lineup soon.

Reese McGuire Has Two-Hit Day

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire hit a pair of singles on Wednesday, finishing the day going 2-for-3 with a run scored against the Red Sox. The 26-year-old has now recorded a hit in each of his last five starts as he is pushing teammate Danny Jansen into a near 50/50 split behind the plate. McGuire has a small platoon advantage since he bats from the left side, but Jansen isn't helping his playing time cause either with a lowly .141 BA on the year. McGuire is a player to watch out for in deeper leagues if he can work the timeshare in his favor.

Reese McGuire, Breyvic Valera Pass Through Waivers

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire and infielder Breyvic Valera both cleared waivers and were assigned outright to the club's alternate training site. The players had been designated for assignment at the end of the spring as both were out of minor league options. Retaining McGuire helps ensure the club has sufficient upper-level catching depth to weather an injury at the MLB level to either Danny Jansen or Alejandro Kirk. The club also recently acquired veteran minor league catcher Juan Graterol from the Los Angeles Angels. McGuire, 26, is known as a glove-first backstop and he hit just .073 last season in 19 games. Valera, 29, has 54 games of MLB experience but he has a career 62 wRC+.
