Spencer Howard News
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Spencer Howard (back) was optioned to minor league camp on Friday, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Howard has been dealing with back spasms the past two weeks, and has been working his way back to pitching in live game action again. The move to minor league camp will allow Howard the top prospect in the Phillies organization more time to prepare for the season, as it is likely a matter of when, not if, he'll be back in Philadelphia. Howard made just two appearances this spring before being shut down, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out six in three innings of work. Managers in most formats can safely ignore Howard on draft day, but when he returns to Philadelphia he could be an interesting streaming option with the potential to become a must-roster player.
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Spencer Howard (back) took a step in the right direction on Friday. Howard, who is dealing with back issues, was able to throw from 120 feet on Friday afternoon, with manager Joe Girardi saying a bullpen session on Sunday could be possible for the 24-year-old. It's currently unclear where Howard fits in with the Phillies' plans, though they'd presumably like him to be a part of the rotation at some point, albeit with a limited workload. The top pitching prospect had a rough stint in the majors last year- though he impressed in 30 2/3 innings of Double-A ball in 2019, pitching to a 2.35 ERA with a 23.8 K-BB rate and a 14.4 swinging strike rate.
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Spencer Howard (back) was scratched from his earlier start due to back spasms. Howard was slated to pitch two innings against the Yankees, though manager Joe Girardi isn't concerned with the ailment, saying that the 24-year-old should be good to go in a couple of days. Howard flashed big-time strikeout ability in the minors but suffered from an inflated WHIP, as well as a tendency to give up the long ball. His potential warrants rostering him in dynasty formats, though investors in redraft leagues might want to look elsewhere for young, upside starters.
