Steven Wright Signs Minor League Deal With Pirates

Free agent pitcher Steven Wright agreed to a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Wright has missed time over the last three years due to suspensions for domestic violence and PED use, before being knocked out of the 2020 season following Tommy John surgery. Wright is known for his knuckleball, and he would likely be used in relief if he is called up to Pittsburgh. He might have some value in deeper SV/HLD leagues if he reaches the majors, but in most formats managers should be able to safely ignore him.

Steven Wright Expected to Join Bullpen on Tuesday

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright (suspension) is expected to join the team's bullpen on Tuesday. Wright recently finished serving an 80-game suspension for PED usage. Wright pitched very well during his minor league rehab appearances. The team may ease him back into action, but Wright could end up playing a big role in the Boston bullpen.

Steven Wright Close To Returning

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright (knee), who was suspended 80 games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs in spring training, is eligible to start a minor league rehab assignment on June 10, 15 days before the team can activate him onto the 25-man roster. The knuckleballer has already thrown a pair of two-inning simulated games last Tuesday and Saturday and is scheduled to go three innings on Wednesday. The right-hander's knee has been fine so far. However, he'll likely strictly be a bullpen arm after posting a 1.52 ERA in 16 relief outings in 2018. Because of his suspension, Wright won't be eligible for the playoffs if the Red Sox qualify.

Red Sox Settle With Steven Wright

The Boston Red Sox avoided salary arbitration with pitcher Steven Wright by signing him to a one-year, $1.375 million deal. Knee issues limited the knuckleballer to only 53 2/3 innings (four starts) for the BoSox in 2018, but he was great when on the mound (2.68 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 7.0 K/9). He doesn't strike many out but can be a deep league streamer if he's in the rotation. Wright's role will be up in the air entering spring training, and his health will probably determine his role. He has no fantasy relevance as a swingman out of the bullpen.

Steven Wright Undergoes Another Knee Operation

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright (knee) underwent left knee arthroscopy and debridement on Monday, and his timetable for a return is unclear. "Wright will continue to rehab and prepare for a return to pitching in the 2019 season," the team said in a press release. The knuckleballer had an operation on the same knee a year ago, and it limited him to just 53 2/3 innings (four starts) in 2018. When on the mound he was great, though, going 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 42 strikeouts. His bothersome knee and unclear role for next season will make him one to avoid in fantasy drafts.

Steven Wright Expected To Join World Series Roster

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright (knee) is expected to be added to the team's World Series roster on Tuesday morning. He will replace either Heath Hembree or Brandon Workman in the bullpen. Wright had reconstructive knee surgery last year and was still bothered by knee issues in 2018, so he'll need offseason surgery once again. But he got through a simulated game on Sunday and should be fine for the World Series. The knuckleballer was quite effective in his limited innings this year and will be a nice option out of the bullpen against the Dodgers. He won't have any DFS value, however.

Steven Wright Hoping To Be On World Series Roster

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright (knee) will throw a simulated game on Sunday and will do some fielding practice on Monday. Manager Alex Cora said Wright is putting himself in the conversation to be included on the World Series roster. The knuckleballer continues to battle issues with his knee after having surgery last offseason. The right-hander had a 2.68 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 7.0 K/9 in 20 outings (four starts) in 2018. If he does make the roster, he'll work in a relief role for Boston.

Steven Wright Needs Surgery On Knee

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright (knee) needs arthroscopic surgery on his knee, but he is waiting on a second opinion to see if he could be available if the team advances to the World Series. The knuckleballer had to be removed from the Division Series because of the injury, so he is unavailable to pitch in the American League Championship Series against the Astros. Wright is coming off major knee surgery from last year and made just 20 appearances this year (four starts). He has been a valuable swingman for Boston in the past, but he doesn't carry much fantasy value, even when he's starting.

Heath Hembree Replacing Steven Wright On ALDS Roster

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Heath Hembree will replace Steven Wright (knee) on the roster for the American League Division Series against the Yankees, according to a source. Wright complained of knee issues before Game 1 on Friday and was sent for an MRI exam, which didn't wield good results. The knuckleballer won't be eligible for the Championship Series now should the Red Sox advance. Hembree went 4-1 this year with a 4.20 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and career-high 11.4 K/9 in 67 appearances (60 innings). He fans a lot but also walks a lot (4.1 BB/9) and allowed 10 homers on the season. He's unlikely to be used in pressure-cooked, late-inning situations in the series.

Steven Wright Likely To Be Replaced On ALDS Roster

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Steven Wright (knee) is likely to be replaced on the roster for the American League Division Series against the Yankees, according to sources. Wright was recovering from major left knee surgery this year but felt his knee bothering him before Game 1 on Friday and will visit with a knee specialist when the team gets to New York. Heath Hembree and Bobby Poyner are both options to replace Wright in the ALDS. If Boston wants more length, they could opt to go with Hector Velazquez or Brian Johnson. If Wright is replaced on the roster, he wouldn't be able to pitch in the Championship Series if the team advanced.
