Blake Parker Falters, Trevor Hildenberger Earns Save
Minnesota Twins closer Blake Parker struggled in the ninth inning on Sunday, walking two Detroit Tigers batters and getting just one out. Team manager Rocco Baldelli then turned to right-hander Trevor Hildenberger, who promptly slammed the door on Detroit, striking out both of the batters he faced. While Parker appeared to have been pulling away from the pack for the closer job, Sunday's proceedings give pause to his fantasy owners. Baldelli has shown that he wants to use a committee at the closer position with Hildenberger now throwing his hat into the ring. This is likely to be a messy situation for fantasy purposes.
Minnesota Twins reliever Trevor Hildenberger recorded his first save since August 13, 2017, and just the second of his career on Saturday. It wasn't a pretty save as Hildenberger came in to protect a 4-1 lead but promptly served up a two-run homer to Detroit Tigers second baseman Niko Goodrum. He then allowed the tying run to reach base on a single before getting three straight outs. Many believed Addison Reed would get the first shot at saves in Minnesota after the Fernando Rodney trade but Reed has not pitched well this season. Reed's ineffectiveness likely led to Hildenberger getting a shot to close out Saturday's game, although the homer allowed couldn't have done much to inspire his manager's confidence in him in the closer's role. This is shaping up as a situation to avoid as saves should be sparse for a Twins team that has thrown in the towel for the 2018 season.
The Minnesota Twins turned to reliever Trevor Hildenberger to close out a win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Hildenberger earned four outs, striking out three in the game. Matt Belisle had been seeing the majority of the save chances since Minnesota shipped Brandon Kintzler to Washington, but Belisle blew a save on Saturday, his fourth blown save of the season. Nothing is imminent as of now, but it would be wise to keep Hildenberger on your radar in case the Twins decide to make a change at the closer position. Hildenberger has a 3.13 ERA in 13 games for the Twins this season.
