The Tennessee Titans released wide receiver Nick Williams and quarterback Austin Davis on Tuesday. Williams dropped a potential game-winning touchdown in Week 5. He played in two games for the Titans this year and has only 28 catches for 263 yards and two touchdowns in his career. Davis is no longer needed with Blaine Gabbert (head) back to full health. Linebacker Robert Spillane was promoted from the practice squad in a corresponding move.
The Tennessee Titans are signing free-agent quarterback Austin Davis on Tuesday, according to a source. It gives the team some veteran insurance with Blaine Gabbert in the concussion protocol and Marcus Mariota still nursing an elbow injury. Davis spent last season with Seattle but didn't attempt a pass. He hasn't attempted a pass in the NFL since 2015 with the Browns.
The Seattle Seahawks placed tight end Ed Dickson (quadriceps) on the reserve/Non-Football Injury list on Saturday and also placed quarterback Austin Davis on Injured Reserve, according to a source. Dickson will now miss the first six games of the season. Nick Vannett will be the main pass-catching tight end but will share time with rookie Will Dissly. Brett Hundley will be Russell Wilson's backup to enter the season.
The Seattle Seahawks are re-signing quarterback Austin Davis, according to a source. Davis will receive the veteran's minimum after serving as Russell Wilson's backup in 2017. The Davis signing will not end the team's talks with free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick, however. As of now, Davis will compete with Stephen Morris for the right to hold the clipboard for Wilson next season.
In a bit of a surprise move, the Seattle Seahawks have awarded the backup quarterback job to Austin Davis. Davis was brought in during the offseason to compete for the gig with Trevone Boykin, 2016's backup quarterback, but both QBs looked dreadful early on. Some other candidates including media sensation Colin Kaepernick were considered. However, the competition between the two got better, and Davis won out in the end.
The Seattle Seahawks have to be pleased with what they saw from possible backup quarterback Austin Davis on Friday night. Davis went a perfect 5-for-5 on passes, including a beautiful 28-yard touchdown pass along the sideline to Tanner McEvoy that was placed perfectly to allow him to use his height to haul it in. Davis was gifted a dreadful performance by presumed backup Trevone Boykin (0-for-6 with an interception), so the competition for backup still appears firmly within reach. The last week of practice and the fourth preseason game will be the deciding factors.
The Seattle Seahawks signed quarterback Austin Davis in the offseason in hopes that he could raise the level of backup QB on the team either through his own performance or through the pressure it would place on returning backup Trevone Boykin. Instead, both Davis and Boykin have played dreadfully in training camp. Davis is known for his short stint as a mediocre starter for the Rams in 2014 and drama-filled three-game career with the Browns in 2015, but he's since been relegated to backup duty. Seattle is known for their open-competition approach, so if Davis can get a handle on his performance, he could still snag the spot going into the regular season.
