Detroit Lions running back Benny Snell Jr. was released by the team as they got their roster down to 53 men on Tuesday. The former Kentucky Wildcat spent the last four seasons with the Steelers, where he compiled 982 rushing yards on 275 carries (3.6 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns, mostly in a backup role. He'll try to latch on with another team or be signed to Detroit's practice squad ahead of the regular season. The Lions will roll with David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, and fullback Jason Cabinda heading into the season-opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, Sept. 7.
Benny Snell Jr. Rushes For 26 Yards In Preseason Finale
Detroit Lions running back Benny Snell Jr. carried the rock five times and racked up 26 yards in Friday night's 26-17 preseason win over the Carolina Panthers. Snell played much of the second half with the third unit, and his longest gain went for eight yards on the night. The former Pittsburgh Steeler is looking to make a name for himself with the Lions and is currently fighting for a backup roster spot. Barring injury, he isn't worth any fantasy consideration in any leagues at this time.
Najee Harris Gets Another DNP, Benny Snell Jr. Limited
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris (oblique) missed his second straight day of practice this week on Thursday, while running back Benny Snell Jr. (knee) popped up on the injury report after putting in a limited practice. Harris picked up an oblique injury that isn't considered serious in Monday night's win over the Indianapolis Colts, but he's looking very iffy for Sunday's game versus the Atlanta Falcons. Snell and Anthony McFarland Jr. combined to split the backfield work on Monday when Harris departed. Rookie Jaylen Warren (hamstring) was inactive in Week 12 and has been cleared to return this weekend, so if Harris is out, there's a good chance that Warren will lead Pittsburgh's backfield this Sunday.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. saw his first action of the season in a Week 12 win over the Indianapolis Colts, rushing 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown while adding a six-yard reception on Monday night. Snell was originally expected to serve as the backup to Najee Harris with Jaylen Warren (hamstring) inactive, but Harris wound up leaving shortly before halftime with an abdominal injury, forcing Snell into the lead-back role. Snell would set up as a mid-range RB3 against the Atlanta Falcons if Harris and/or Warren do not suit up. This is a situation to monitor throughout the week as the Steelers gear up to head down to Atlanta for Sunday's game.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown while adding a six-yard reception in a 24-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12. Snell saw his first touches of the season with Jaylen Warren (hamstring) inactive and Najee Harris leaving the game at the end of the first half with an abdominal injury. Warren's status for Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons is unclear but this has the potential to be a messy three-man committee in Pittsburgh with Snell and Anthony McFarland Jr. all in line to possibly see touches if Harris isn't able to suit up. Stay tuned to the injury statuses of both Harris and Warren heading into Week 13.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. is now listed as third on the RB depth chart behind starter Najee Harris and rookie Jaylen Warren. The Steelers might lighten Harris' load a bit in his second NFL season after he led the league in touches in his rookie campaign, but Snell may not even benefit from extra work as the No. 3. The 24-year-old is well off the fantasy radar in all leagues as things currently stand. In 17 games (zero starts) last year, Snell had career-lows in carries (36) and rushing yards (98) while failing to reach the end zone. If you want a handcuff for Harris in deeper leagues, Warren is your guy.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. made the team's initial 53-man roster on Tuesday alongside starter Najee Harris, rookie Jaylen Warren and fullback Derek Watt. Although Snell didn't have a great training camp and preseason, he's currently listed as the team's No. 2 running back behind Harris and ahead of Warren. In his two preseason appearances, the 24-year-old carried the ball eight times for only 13 yards and caught two passes for 15 yards and a touchdown. With Snell making the roster, the Steelers waived Anthony McFarland Jr. It's possible that Warren will eventually be the No. 2 behind Harris if he continues to impress moving into the regular season.
Jaylen Warren Surpasses Benny Snell Jr. As No. 2 RB
It appears that Pittsburgh Steelers undrafted rookie running back Jaylen Warren has supplanted Benny Snell Jr. as the team's No. 2 running back behind Najee Harris. Warren has done nothing but impress at training camp and has benefitted from first-team repetitions with Harris and Snell banged up a bit. The 23-year-old probably isn't worth anything more than a late-round flier as a handcuff for those that take Harris early in deeper leagues, but he could see significant work in Pittsburgh's backfield in his rookie season if anything were to happen to Harris. Warren had six carries for 34 yards and caught four of his five targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in the preseason opener last week. He's rising up draft boards in dynasty/keeper leagues.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. (knee) didn't take the field during Thursday's practice. Snell was seen with a wrap around his knee on Wednesday. It sounds like the 24-year-old is dealing with a minor knee issue. He is currently battling for the backup role behind Najee Harris. The Steelers recently mentioned that they want to limit Harris this upcoming season. That means, whoever wins the backup spot on the team could get a decent amount of carries. Fantasy managers should expect Snell to be back on the field within the next few days.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. is currently entrenched as the team's No. 2 RB behind bell-cow back Najee Harris. Harris touched the ball 381 times in his rookie season, which means that the only way Snell will contribute significantly in 2022 is if Harris gets injured. There is a perception that he's been a bust so far in his career, but in 10 career games in which he either started or finished with at least 12 carries, he's averaged 16 carries for 65 yards per game (4.05 yards per carry). The 24-year-old worked on his speed this offseason and also slimmed down. Head coach Mike Tomlin hinted that Snell and Anthony McFarland could face competition in training camp from a veteran free-agent back if they bring one in. Snell is strictly a deep-league handcuff for those that roster Harris.
