Brandon Allen News
The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed quarterback Brandon Allen to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to a source. Allen was the team's top choice to back up Joe Burrow in 2022, and they are excited to have him back. It will be Allen's third straight season in Cincinnati. The 29-year-old has gone 107-for-176 for 1,074 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions in 11 games (six starts) for the Bengals in his two seasons with the team. He was initially a sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016 out of Arkansas, and he made his NFL debut in 2019 with the Denver Broncos, making three starts. Allen would only have low-end QB2 appeal if he's forced into starting duties in the event of a Burrow injury.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Brandon Allen is likely to start under center for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Browns with the news that Joe Burrow (knee, rest) would not be traveling with the team. Allen made five starts last season in place of an injured Burrow, averaging 185 passing yards per outing while combining for five touchdowns and four interceptions. His matchup is a difficult one to crack the code on as the Browns' defense has yielded the sixth-fewest passing yards per game this season (208.5), but will be without top corner Denzel Ward (Reserve/COVID-19 list). In addition, Joe Mixon (Reserve/COVID-19 list) will be held out with Cincinnati having little reason to push the remainder of its starters into unnecessary action. Aside from GPP lineups in DFS formats, Allen holds little fantasy appeal Sunday, with his presence under center also making Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tyler Boyd risky options.
Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback Brandon Allen was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday. The obvious concern here is for starter Joe Burrow, who threw for a franchise-record 525 passing yards in the Week 16 win over the division-rival Baltimore Ravens. Burrow and Allen are the team's only QBs on the active roster, with Jake Browning on the practice squad. Burrow's fantasy managers will be keeping their fingers crossed this week that he won't join Allen on the COVID list. The Bengals offense would obviously be in real trouble in Week 17 against the Kansas City Chiefs if they were forced to start Browning under center against a stout KC defense.
