Despite not being able to come to an agreement with the Denver Broncos after visiting them, free-agent linebacker Clay Matthews remains open to play in 2020, "provided it's the right opportunity for him and his family," agent Ryan Williams said in a statement. The Broncos are looking for some linebacking help after releasing Todd Davis and after the season-ending ankle injury to Von Miller this week, but Matthews apparently wasn't the right fit. Ten of his 11 seasons in the league were with Green Bay, and he spent 2019 with the Rams. Matthews is no longer an elite pass-rushing linebacker, but he'd be a good veteran presence in the right locker room for a team that has a chance to compete in 2020. The 34-year-old actually posted eight sacks last year, which was his highest total since 2014.
The Arizona Cardinals haven't been shy about adding older pass-rush specialists in the past, and linebacker Clay Matthews could fit that role again in 2020. Multiple personnel people have openly stated that the goal is to have the pass-rush unit work on a rotational basis and have a lot of bodies cycling in and out regularly, so it wouldn't be surprising for the team to add another pass-rusher to the squad. It seems unlikely that the Cardinals will make a huge splash by chasing someone like Jadeveon Clowney, but a recently released veteran like Matthews could fit the bill as a complementary piece.
The Los Angeles Rams released linebacker Clay Matthews on Thursday, according to a source. In an effort to shed salary cap space, the Rams also released star running back Todd Gurley on Thursday. Matthews is nearing the end of his career, but he was still plenty productive in 13 games in his only season with the Rams in 2019, notching eight sacks, 37 tackles (27 solo), nine tackles for loss, 11 QB hits and two forced fumbles. The long-time Green Bay Packer can still play and can get after the quarterback, but he's not much of an IDP option at this point in his career. He hasn't made a Pro Bowl since 2015.
Los Angeles Rams linebacker Clay Matthews (jaw) is back at practice on Wednesday, and head coach Sean McVay said Matthews will play in Week 10 against the Steelers if all goes well the rest of the week. The former long-time Packer hasn't played since Oct. 3 and has 19 total tackles, six sacks and two forced fumbles in five games in his first season in Los Angeles, so his return will be a boost to a Rams Defense that will be in play for fantasy owners on the road against Pittsburgh. Matthews' presence in the middle of the field would be bad news for Steelers running backs James Conner (if he plays) and Jaylen Samuels.
The Los Angeles Rams signed free-agent linebacker Clay Matthews to a two-year deal worth a maximum of $16.75 million, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The former first-rounder will return to his hometown. Matthews had double-digit sacks in four of his first six seasons with the Packers and was an All-Pro in 2010. The 32-year-old's play has declined in recent seasons, but he'll bring veteran leadership to an already stacked Rams unit.
Clay Matthews Breaks Nose in Charity Softball Game
Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews broke his nose in a charity softball game on Saturday. He was hit by a line drive in the face while he was pitching. In 2017, Matthews returned to his role as an outside pass rusher, where he was only moderately effective. The former All Pro is part of a pass-rushing unit that looks like it may be the weakness of Green Bays defense heading into 2018. Matthews shouldnt face any long-term issues on account of the broken nose, which will require surgery. He was already sitting out of organized team activities on account of a minor knee surgery that he had this offseason.
As reported by Rob Demovsky, Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews (knee) underwent a procedure that was described as a clean-up for his knee shortly after Green Bays season ended. Matthews returned to his role as an outside rusher this year on a full-time basis. It was in that role that he finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2010. He had spent some time playing inside linebacker on account of injuries for much of the past two seasons. Still, he was ultimately disappointing and didnt have much of an impact in 2017. He has lacked a burst rushing the passer that he had in years past, and his best position going forward may be inside linebacker. He is scheduled to make $11.4 million in 2018, a large amount for either an ineffective pass rusher or quality inside linebacker, so it seems likely that he will either be cut by Green Bay or forced to restructure his contract. Finding an elite outside pass rusher to pair with Nick Perry will be a high priority for Green Bay this offseason.
Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews (groin) has been ruled out for the remainder of the Week 11 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. He suffered a groin injury in the third quarter. Matthews had his first sack since Week 4. Matthewss absence shouldnt affect Green Bays defense heavily as he hasnt been an impactful pass rusher this year. His injury should lead to more playing time for rookie linebacker Vince Biegel.
