Texans Working Out Cody Kessler, C.J. Prosise, Ryan Grant
The Houston Texans worked out free-agent quarterback Cody Kessler, running back C.J. Prosise and wide receiver Ryan Grant on Wednesday. Kessler was most recently released by the Patriots. The 27-year-old out of USC was a third-round pick of the Browns in 2016, but he lasted just two seasons there before a quick stop in Jacksonville in 2018. He's thrown for 2,215 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions in his 12 career starts. Prosise was also a third-round pick in 2016 by the Seahawks. He just wasn't able to stay healthy in four years in Seattle, never playing in more than nine games in a single season. Grant started his career with the Redskins (four years) before one-year stops in Indianapolis and Oakland the last two years. His best season came in 2017 with Washington when he had 45 receptions for 573 yards and four touchdowns in seven starts.
The New England Patriots are releasing quarterback Cody Kessler on Wednesday, according to a source. The move leaves just Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on the team's quarterback depth chart. Kessler didn't see any game action last season with the Pats, and he has played in only 17 games (12 starts) since being taken in the third round in 2016 by the Browns. The 26-year-old (27 in May) made eight starts in his rookie season with Cleveland and went 0-8 with six touchdowns and two interceptions. In New England, it will be Stidham's job to lose over the veteran Hoyer in training camp now that Tom Brady is in Tampa Bay. It remains to be seen if the Patriots look at either Cam Newton or Andy Dalton or take a QB in this month's draft.
Quarterback Cody Kessler was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. Kessler had a chance to win the Eagles backup job this preseason, but he suffered a concussion which led to the Eagles luring Josh McCown out of retirement. McCown easily won the backup job and will hold the clipboard for starter Carson Wentz. Kessler ended up attempting just 15 passes in the preseason, completing seven of them. He'll latch on as a backup somewhere else before long.
Cody Kessler Back on the Field for Thursday's Preseason Game
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Cody Kessler played in Thursday's preseason game, completing three of his five pass attempts for 34 yards. Kessler had to leave a game earlier in the preseason and missed practice time due to a concussion, but he was able to get cleared and played a bit on Thursday night. With the Eagles signing Josh McCown, Kessler might not make the final 53-man roster, but he should catch on as a backup before long somewhere this season.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Cody Kessler (concussion) has resumed practicing. He was the main backup to starter Carson Wentz after Nate Sudfeld (wrist) got hurt, but the Eagles signed Josh McCown after watching their two backups go down. McCown will serve as the primary backup once the season starts, and Kessler's likely only around until Sudfeld is able to return.
Cody Kessler Suffers a Concussion on Thursday Night
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Cody Kessler suffered a concussion on Thursday night. He attempted four passes before being forced to leave the game, completing one for 11 yards. Kessler will enter the concussion protocol and while he should be ready for Week 1, fifth-rounder Clayton Thorson is the only one left to backup starter Carson Wentz in Philly.
Cody Kessler Completes Three Passes in the First Preseason Game
Philadelphia Eagles number three quarterback Cody Kessler completed three passes in six tries on Thursday, going for 12 scoreless yards. It wasn't a significant performance by Kessler, but it was significant because the guy right ahead of him on the depth chart, Nate Sudfeld, could miss time with a wrist injury. Kessler would be the next guy up and could serve as Carson Wentz's direct backup if Sudfeld misses time and the Eagles don't upgrade the quarterback room.
The Jacksonville Jaguars released quarterback Cody Kessler on Thursday, according to league sources. Kessler played in five games for the Jags last year and threw for 709 yards while throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions in 131 attempts. He was hoping to serve as Nick Foles' primary backup in 2019, but now that'll be a competition between Tanner Lee, Gardner Minshew II and Alex McGough. It's not pretty.
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Cody Kessler threw for 106 yards on 12-for-17 passing in Sunday's win over the Miami Dolphins. Kessler added two rushing yards as well. Kessler was replaced twice by former starting quarterback Blake Bortles, once when Kessler left with an early injury and once in the fourth quarter when the team decided Bortles gave them the best chance of winning. Bortles ended up going 5-for-6 for 39 yards and added 25 rushing yards on four carries. The Jaguars face an injured Texans secondary in Week 17 that just gave up over 400 passing yards to Nick Foles, but the uncertainty surrounding this starting job and the chance that the starter gets pulled for ineffectiveness makes it impossible to trust the Jaguars quarterback position in the season's final week.
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Cody Kessler threw for just 57 yards in Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins. He was 9-for-17 passing the football and threw a pick. Kessler also added 68 rushing yards on six carries. The rushing yardage helped make his day a little better from a fantasy perspective, though a lost fumble negated some of that. Jacksonville plays Miami in Week 16 and while the Dolphins have given up some big days to quarterbacks this season, there is zero reason to start Kessler with a fantasy championship on the line.
