Colt McCoy Retires From NFL, Joins NBC Sports For Big Ten Coverage
Former NFL quarterback Colt McCoy has announced his retirement and will join NBC Sports for its Big Ten college football coverage. McCoy, a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist during his college career at Texas, set an NCAA Division I record with 45 career wins as a four-year starter from 2006 to 2009. He led the Longhorns to the BCS National Championship game in 2010, capping off a perfect 12-0 regular season with a Big 12 title. Drafted in the third round by the Cleveland Browns in 2010, McCoy amassed an 11-25 record over his 36 NFL starts. His final NFL stint was with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, where he played in two preseason games before being released due to elbow issues. Over his career, McCoy also played for the New York Giants, Washington Commanders, San Francisco 49ers, and Cleveland Browns, finishing with 7,975 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions in 56 games.
Free-agent quarterback Colt McCoy was one of eight players to work out for the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, according to Field Yates of ESPN. This move makes sense for Minnesota, as backup quarterback Nick Mullens (back) could potentially be placed on Injured Reserve. That means the Vikings are one Kirk Cousins injury away from starting 25-year-old rookie Jaren Hall under center. McCoy could serve as a nice stopgap backup QB option if Mullens ends up going to IR.
The Arizona Cardinals released veteran quarterback Colt McCoy on Monday. McCoy has been getting reps with the first-team offense during the preseason but looks to be the odd man out after the team traded for Joshua Dobbs. The 36-year-old started 36 games and appeared in 56 games over the last 13 seasons, passing for 7,975 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions. He could have some interest from other organizations. After his release, Dobbs and rookie quarterback Clayton Tune will seemingly compete to be the team's Week 1 starter against the Washington Commanders. Both will have low ceilings in a mediocre Cardinals' offense. Kyler Murray (PUP) will miss at least the first four games of 2023.
Colt McCoy Starts, Plays One Drive In Preseason Opener
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy got the start in the team's 18-17 win over Denver Friday night. The veteran just saw one series, completing all four pass attempts for 17 yards. He also added one carry for five yards. All signs point to the 36-year-old being the team's starter in 2023, as long as Kyler Murray (knee) remains sidelined. He is not worth a pick in standard-sized leagues but should be added in deeper superflex leagues.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy (elbow) was taking part in organized team activities on Monday. All signs point to McCoy, who is back after dealing with an elbow injury last year that lingered into the offseason, getting a sizeable workload this year with Kyler Murray (knee) not expected to be ready for the start of the season. "For me, my No. 1 priority is learning the system," McCoy said. The veteran signal-caller went 3-3 while completing 71% of his passes for 1,520 yards, four TDs and four interceptions in six games in place of the injured Murray in his first two years in the desert. Arizona also has David Blough and Jeff Driskel at the position, but McCoy has the most experience and is expected to start in Week 1 this fall.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy (undisclosed) had a "minor" undisclosed procedure after the 2022 season, according to new head coach Jonathan Gannon. The head coach also added that McCoy "looks good" and will be ready to go for 2023. But not having starter Kyler Murray (knee) on the field for offseason workouts as offensive coordinator Drew Petzing installs a new offense this year will present "some unique challenges." If McCoy also misses some offseason activities, David Blough and Trace McSorley would be Arizona's only healthy quarterbacks. The 36-year-old McCoy played in four games (three starts) for the Cardinals last year and had 780 passing yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
According to owner Michael Bidwill, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy (undisclosed) will be limited during the offseason. The 36-year-old started a few games last season after Kyler Murray (knee) went down with a torn ACL. However, McCoy suffered a concussion, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign. It's unknown exactly what is ailing the signal-caller. But with Murray not expected to be ready for the start of the 2023 season, McCoy would presumably take over until he returns. David Blough and Trace McSorley, who both started last season, are free agents, meaning the team may need to look outside for a starting quarterback if McSorley remains limited heading into training camp.
David Blough To Start For Cardinals, Colt McCoy Ruled Out
Arizona Cardinals quarterback David Blough will draw the start against the Atlanta Falcons, as Colt McCoy (concussion protocol) still has symptoms and Trace McSorley has apparently been benched. DeAndre Hopkins (knee) could also miss this game, so James Conner might be the only Cardinals player worth starting in fantasy football. Blough is far from the fantasy radar, but as always, some managers could be forced to start him in Superflex or two-quarterback leagues. It's worth noting Atlanta has allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy (concussion) will start in Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons. The veteran quarterback missed the Christmas day matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he suffered a concussion in Week 15 against the Denver Broncos. Trace McSorley started last week for the Cardinals, throwing for 217 yards and an interception in the overtime loss. With Kyler Murray (knee) out for the year, McCoy will start the final two games for Arizona. The veteran quarterback has averaged 195 passing yards and 8.2 fantasy points per game in his four starts this season. While this week's matchup against the Falcons is fantasy-friendly, fantasy players have no reason to start the veteran quarterback.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy (concussion) missed his team's Week 16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a concussion, leaving Trace McSorley to man the offense. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Monday that the hope is that McCoy can clear the league's concussion protocol this week in time to start against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17. A return to the lineup for McCoy would be good news for the Arizona offense, especially DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins struggled with an erratic McSorley under center in Week 16, catching just one of 10 targets for four yards. If McCoy ends up sitting out, none of the pass-catchers in Arizona would be playable in fantasy this weekend.
