The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent quarterback Connor Cook to the practice squad on Thursday and released defensive tackle Kendrick Norton from the practice squad in a corresponding move. The team also reached an injury settlement with defensive tackle Jeremiah Sirles, and he has been released from the Injured Reserve. Taylor Heinicke remains the backup to Cam Newton.
Free-agent quarterback Connor Cook, who was cut by the Raiders last weekend, visited with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday, according to a league source. The Panthers only have Taylor Heinicke backing up Cam Newton, so it may make some sense to add Cook to the roster.
The New York Jets had a visit with free-agent quarterback Connor Cook on Tuesday, according to a source. However, the team ended up signing Webb to their practice squad. Cook was cut by the Raiders over the weekend and should wind up on another team's roster before long.
The Oakland Raiders released quarterbacks Connor Cook and EJ Manuel after they traded for AJ McCarron. With Derek Carr as the starter in 2018, that leaves McCarron as his sole backup heading into the season. McCarron was fighting for a starting job in Buffalo but was injured in the preseason and lost out to rookie Josh Allen, making him expendable. McCarron has very little NFL experience, so the Raiders would be in some trouble if he's forced to make starts.
Oakland Raiders quarterback Connor Cook ended the preseason on a low note Thursday versus the Seahawks. Cook ended with only 35 yards and one touchdown from three completions. He didn't see a ton of playing time, simply for the fact that the Raiders other quarterback, EJ Manuel, was playing so well and put up three touchdowns. Cook has been competing for the backup role which Manuel held last season and with this final performance, looks to have reclaimed it.
Connor Cook Ready For Action Thursday Night Versus Seahawks
Oakland Raiders quarterback Connor Cook will see plenty of playing time versus the Seahawks on Thursday night. Starting quarterback Derek Carr won't see any action, so the time comes down to Cook and EJ Manuel, who are both competing for the backup role. Cook has played in all three preseason games so far but has been up and down, showing plenty of inconsistency. He had one touchdown and 141 yards in week 1, under 50 yards in week 2, then no touchdowns and one interception in week 3.
Connor Cook Looks Average In Preseason Game Versus Rams
Oakland Raiders quarterback Connor Cook looked very pedestrian in Saturday's game against the Rams. Cook finished with no touchdowns and only 49 yards on 6 of 12 passing. Cook looked very strong in their first preseason game against the Lions, with 141 yards and one touchdown, but struggled in practice this week. He is likely going to end up as the third-string quarterback for the Raiders behind Derek Carr and EJ Manuel.
EJ Manuel Wins Backup Job for Raiders Over Connor Cook
After outplaying Oakland Raiders quarterback Connor Cook in the preseason, EJ Manuel has officially won the backup QB job, according to the team's Week 1 depth chart. While Manuel would be taking the reigns of an elite offense should anything bad happen to Derek Carr, Manuel winning the job was less a product of him playing well and more due to Cook's awful play. Manuel certainly had good moments, but overall looked to be far behind where Derek Carr leaves off. Should Carr be hurt, Manuel may be somewhat interesting as a flier QB2, but nothing more.
Connor Cook to be Avoided at All Costs Wild-Card Weekend
The Raiders were a team to watch heading into the playoffs, but now are the team to avoid. With Connor Cook making his first career start against the No. 1 ranked Houston defense in their stadium sans Pro Bowl left tackle Donald Penn, the Raiders are a fantasy wasteland. Cook played decently against the best secondary in the league last week, but he's still far too much of a wild card (get it, because it's wild-card weekend) to be trusted in any regard. Cook is the worst fantasy QB play all weekend.
Connor Cook Replaces Matt McGloin, Shows Promise as Future Backup
In his first game on the active roster, Connor Cook ended up getting extended playing time after Raiders second-string quarterback Matt McGloin left the game early with an injury. While Cook only finished 14-for-21 for 150 yards, one touchdown and one interception, he simply looked more impressive than McGloin. His passes were more crisp, decisive and most importantly, he didn't look completely lost while on the field. Cook was drafted to replace McGloin as Derek Carr's backup after this season, but h could overtake McGloin for wild-card Weekend, depending on McGloin's status. With no expectations, Cook played quite well and should be a quality backup as he continues to develop.
