The New York Jets signed free-agent running back Damarea Crockett and defensive lineman Ifeadi Odenigbo to undisclosed deals on Friday and released tight end Izaiah Gathings in a corresponding move. Crockett missed all of last year due to a torn ACL that he suffered in training camp. In his rookie campaign in 2021 with the Denver Broncos, he had just three carries for seven yards in 12 games (zero starts). The 25-year-old will compete for a roster spot for the Jets in training camp as depth at the position. Odenigbo played in 14 games (zero starts) for the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022 and had only 18 tackles (nine solo), 3.5 sacks, four tackles for loss and six QB hits.
Denver Broncos running back Damarea Crockett was elevated from the practice squad ahead of Sunday's game against the Jaguars. All three of the team's running backs are healthy so it remains to be seen what type of role he will have in Week 2. He did appear on the field for 63 percent of special teams snaps last week. Crockett has zero career touches since going undrafted in 2019. He accrued 2,389 scrimmage yards and 21 touchdowns through three seasons at Missouri.
The Houston Texans have waived promising undrafted free agent running back Damarea Crockett. Crockett became expendable in the team's eyes after they traded for Chiefs running back Carlos Hyde on Saturday, with the team choosing to move on from Crockett because he hasn't been contributing on special teams during the preseason. Crockett had some good moments for the Texans and should be able to land on some other team where his lack of special teams ability won't be as much of an impediment as it is for the Texans.
Houston Texans running back Damarea Crockett is likely still in competition to back up Duke Johnson and take some early down work, but Thursday's preseason finale didn't offer the Texans the best look at him. Crockett gained just 14 yards on his seven carries and added a four-yard reception as well. He was outplayed by fellow undrafted rookie Karan Higdon. The Athletic's Aaron Reiss is projecting Crockett to make the initial roster, but says Crockett's lack of special teams experience could lead to him being a late cut if Houston signs a veteran running back. There's a lot of question marks here.
Houston Texans running back Damarea Crockett had just four touches in Saturday's preseason loss to the Dallas Cowboys, but he had 27 rushing yards and five receiving yards on those touches. Crockett looked like a better back than Karan Higdon, but Higdon had nine more touches. Crockett could be a fantasy sleeper with Lamar Miller missing the season with an ACL tear, but the situation in Houston is too difficult to figure out right now. Crockett should be grabbed in dynasty leagues, but in shallower re-draft leagues, leave him on waivers or undrafted until we know more.
Houston Texans running back Damarea Crockett had eight carries for 32 yards in Saturday's preseason win against the Detroit Lions. What was most notable about Crockett's game, though, was that both Taiwan Jones and Karan Higdon were used ahead of him in the rotation. Crockett outplayed Higdon, but believers that he's Houston's RB1 in the post-Lamar Miller future of 2020 have to feel disheartened by his spot in Saturday's rotation. Crockett should still be rostered in dynasty leagues for now, but it's not a lock that he'll make this team.
Houston Texans running back Damarea Crockett rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown on six carries in Thursday's preseason loss to the Green Bay Packers. Crockett was the second running back in this one, but Houston was without starting rusher Lamar Miller and newly-acquired backup Duke Johnson. Crockett's ability near the goal-line should help him earn the role of the team's third back and an early-down substitute when Miller needs to rest, but it's still too early for that "should" to be anything more than conditional. Crockett's re-draft value is going to be tied up with Miller's health, but he's becoming a very enticing dynasty option.
Damarea Crockett Getting Goal-Line Carries In Camp
Houston Texans running back Damarea Crockett has been splitting goal-line carries with the recently released D'Onta Foreman in training camp. With Foreman gone, Crockett could see an expanded role as Houston's short-yardage back if he can make the team's final roster. Keep an eye on how Crockett is used during the preseason and if anyone else splits goal-line duties with Crockett during joint practices with the Packers on Monday and Tuesday. Crockett could turn out to be a very deep sleeper this season.
