The Detroit Lions signed free-agent wide receiver Damion Ratley and linebacker Alex Anzalone to one-year deals on Wednesday. Anzalone's deal is worth $1.75 million. Ratley was most recently with the Houston Texans, but he didn't play a snap with the team. He spent the first part of the 2020 season with the New York Giants after two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Ratley has 29 career catches in 31 games and will serve as receiving depth in Detroit. The speedy wideout had a 4.40-second 40-yard dash at his Pro Day in 2018. Anzalone has familiarity with head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn after spending four years with the New Orleans Saints. The former third-round pick has had an up-and-down career and has struggled with missed tackles and run defense, but he'll push for a starting job as an off-ball linebacker.
Taywan Taylor, Damion Ratley Among Cleveland Roster Cuts
The Cleveland Browns parted ways with wide receivers Taywan Taylor and Damion Ratley in roster cutdowns on Saturday morning. Taylor spent one season with the Browns after being drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2017 draft. He was a popular fantasy sleeper at one time but he was never able to translate the hype into production on the field. Taylor drew just one target in three games with Cleveland in 2019. Ratley was a sixth-round draft pick by Cleveland in the 2018 season and caught 25 passes for 344 yards and a touchdown in 26 games. Both will look to catch on with other clubs, although they may have to settle for a spot on a team's practice squad.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Antonio Callaway (ankle) missed practice Monday due to an ankle injury, while wideout Damion Ratley (hamstring) was on the shelf due to a hamstring ailment. The severity of the injuries isn't exactly known. While Ratley isn't someone to rely upon in most fantasy formats, Callaway can be an intriguing fantasy option when healthy. Unfortunately for him, the team added Odell Beckham Jr. to the wide receivers room during the offseason, and Callaway is also suspended for the first four games. He is worth a late-round pick as a WR5 or 6 if you want a little depth and some upside in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.
Antonio Callaway Out, Damion Ratley Takes Advantage
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Antonio Callaway (groin) missed practice time on Monday, so fellow rookie wideout Damion Ratley seized the opportunity with extended first-team reps. "To me, I feel more nervous for practice than the game," he said. "Practice is so much faster than the game." The former Texas A&M standout could see a larger than expected role if Josh Gordon is slow to get back up to speed, and Callaway faces disciplinary action for his earlier off-field incident. Still, Ratley is more of a wait-and-see player for fantasy purposes. Callaway has speed to burn and could emerge as a useful fantasy option sooner rather than later.
