Breshad Perriman, Darren Fells Promoted To Active Roster
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Breshad Perriman and tight end Darren Fells have been promoted to the active roster ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Football Team. Perriman was recently signed to the team's practice squad, but with Antonio Brown (ankle) remaining out against Washington, he is expected to serve as an insurance policy, although Chris Godwin (foot), who is expected to play, and Mike Evans will naturally remain the preferred options for Tom Brady. In addition, Rob Gronkowski (back) also won't suit up, so Fells will slide in behind O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. Nonetheless, both Perriman and Fells likely won't see much action and should only be utilized by the fantasy managers who are desperate to fill a void on their roster.
Tampa Bay Signs Darren Fells To Their Practice Squad
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent tight end Darren Fells to their practice squad on Wednesday. He is expected to be elevated to the 53-man roster before Sunday's game against the Washington Football Team. The 35-year-old was targeted just five times in seven games for the Lions, catching four passes for 43 yards. Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski (back) is dealing with a back issue, and his status is up in the air in Week 10. The former Detroit Lion is behind Gronk, O.J. Howard, and Cameron Brate on the tight end depth chart. Despite Gronk being banged up, Fells would provide Tampa Bay depth at tight end but is not on the fantasy radar in 2021.
Detroit Lions veteran tight end Darren Fells asked for and was granted his release on Monday, according to a source. Fells will go on waivers and could provide an interesting option for tight end-needy teams. The 35-year-old was targeted just five times in seven games for the 0-8 Lions, catching four passes for 43 yards. With Fells moving on, the Lions has Rashod Berry and rookie Brock Wright as options to elevate from the practice squad to the active roster to provide depth behind T.J. Hockenson. Detroit was on their bye in Week 9, but Fells was a healthy scratch in the Week 8 blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He can provide some veteran depth with another organization, but he's unlikely to suddenly become fantasy relevant.
Detroit Lions tight end Darren Fells has drawn praise from the Lions coaching staff through the first two weeks of training camp. The veteran tight end was signed to back up T.J. Hockenson and fit into the TE2 role perfectly. Fells has shown a savvy blocking ability and a pass-catching ability when called upon. All signs are pointing towards a huge season for Hockenson but Fells is providing the type of depth that the Lions have not enjoyed in the past. Fells, at best, will be a touchdown-dependent TE2 fantasy option when the season begins
Free-agent veteran tight end Darren Fells is visiting with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday, according to a source. Fells is coming off 11 touchdowns in the last two seasons with the Houston Texans and could return to Detroit, where he played in 2017. The 35-year-old also had 55 receptions on 76 targets for 653 yards in 32 games (28 starts) over the last two years with Houston. He played mostly in a backup role to Jordan Akins for most of last year, catching 21 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns. The Lions already have T.J. Hockenson as their top pass-catching tight end, so if Fells were to return to Detroit, he'd have very minimal fantasy value as a backup once again. Fells had 17 catches (26 targets) for just 177 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games for the Lions back in 2017.
The Houston Texans released tight end Darren Fells, according to a league source. He was due a $1.5 million non-guaranteed salary in 2021. The Texans also released punter Bryan Anger. The 34-year-old Fells had 55 catches, 653 yards and 11 touchdowns in two seasons with Houston. He was one of quarterback Deshaun Watson's favorite targets in recent seasons. The team traded for former New England Patriots tight end Ryan Izzo to help replace Fells on the roster. Fells' career season came in 2019, when he had 34 receptions for 341 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns while setting a Texans record for most red-zone catches by a tight end. Jordan Akins could be the leader of the tight end depth chart with Fells out of the picture, but Houston also has Pharaoh Brown and Kahale Warring in addition to Izzo.
Jordan Akins, Darren Fells Not Recommended Options
Houston Texans tight end Jordan Akins and tight end Darren Fells are both unappealing options against the Patriots in Week 11. Both players are playing below 70 percent of the snaps and haven't seen more than four targets in their last two contests. To make matters worse, backup Pharaoh Brown was the tight end who caught last week's touchdown pass. This tight end room should be completely avoided for fantasy purposes until one player separates himself.
Houston Texans tight end Darren Fells saw a sharp dip in playing time in Week 9 with the return of Jordan Akins. Fells played at least 78 percent of the snaps in each game missed by Akins, but that number fell to 51 percent with the latter back in the lineup. It also doesn't help that the veteran tight end has been held below 50 yards receiving in five of seven games this year. There are far better options out there if you're looking for a streamer at the tight end position. Don't trust Fells against the Browns with Akins eating into his playing time.
Houston Texans tight end Darren Fells caught two of three targets for 26 receiving yards in a 27-25 win over Jacksonville. Much of Fells' fantasy opportunities come in the red zone, where the Texans traveled to just twice today thanks to their big-play ability. The return of Jordan Akins didn't help either, as Akins saw four targets. This tight end room is officially one to avoid for fantasy purposes, as it's anyone's guess who will have the better game from week-to-week.
Houston Texans tight end Darren Fells enjoyed two strong games in the absence of fellow tight end Jordan Akins (ankle, concussion) before putting up a dud in Week 7 before his team's bye. Akins is expected to return in Week 9 against the Jaguars, who have been very friendly to opposing tight ends. Akins held the edge in snaps to Fells, though the latter has three touchdown catches this year and has been more of a red-zone presence. Clearly, this is a situation to avoid wherever possible for fantasy purposes, despite the strong matchup. Fells is the best bet, though he'll be a touchdown-dependent TE2.
