D'Ernest Johnson News
Former Cleveland Browns running back D'Ernest Johnson agreed to a one-year deal to join the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 27-year-old running back has rushed 141 times for 738 yards and three touchdowns during his four-year career in Cleveland. Johnson impressed in limited action in the absence of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in 2021, but he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a depth piece for the Jags in 2023. He will backup Travis Etienne and JaMycal Hasty, so unless one of those two backs misses time, he won't be on the fantasy radar. Jerome Ford looks to be the No. 2 running back for the Browns with Johnson and Hunt out of town.
According to Tony Grossi of ESPN, running back D'Ernest Johnson isn't expected to re-sign with the Browns. The 27-year-old, who re-signed with Cleveland on a one-year deal in June 2022, has played his entire career with the Browns. However, he hasn't been a consistent contributor, amassing 738 yards and three touchdowns off 141 attempts (64 total games). Nevertheless, Johnson may land on another team, although he isn't anticipated to do anything to benefit fantasy managers, no matter where he ends up next.
In a 32-13 blowout win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, Cleveland Browns running back D'Ernest Johnson saw his first carries of the season with the team resting Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt late in the fourth quarter. Johnson finished with four carries for 17 yards on the ground and was not targeted in the passing game on 11 percent of the offensive snaps. Entering the game, he had played only 10 offensive snaps in five games for Cleveland. The 26-year-old had a 100-yard game last year with both Chubb and Hunt injured, but he has zero fantasy appeal as the No. 3 on the depth chart. However, if Hunt or Johnson himself are traded before Tuesday's deadline, Johnson could become more appealing in deeper fantasy formats.
